help with 3700+ stepping

1613 Views 38 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  danm
I received my AMD 64 3700+ and I think its faulty
the stepping is ''CCBWE'' which I have never seen before on a single core cpu
the only time I have seen this stepping is on X2s or dual core optys

When I put it into my Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI and booted up, I opened cpu-z and many of the areas where greyed out. (will get screen shot when i get home)

Also I download AMD Clock Version 2.0.0 and it show the cpu changes between 2Ghz and 2.3Ghz

I also wondered if it was a voltage spike, but i checked the voltages and there was no fluctuations.

I personally believe i have a faulty cpu...Summary of odd things below:

1. Stepping is messed up ''ccbwe''
2. Clock speeds change from 2.0-2.3
3.Unstable even at stock speeds

Any ideas on what I should do would be helpful

Thanks

Danm

Not sure why it goes up to 2.3Ghz, but have you got Cool 'n' Quiet enabled in the bios? Try downloading CPU-Z and see what that gives for the CPU speed.

For the instability, have you got the latest mobo bios and have you checked that the memory isn't unstable by setting on a lower divider/loosening timings etc?

i was reading in my pc mag in the u that, over 40,000faulty cpus were stolen from a amd factory, they were being labled up and sold to wholesalers at discounted prices, alot were recovered, but they reakon theres still half of them going around,

return it to the retailer you bought it from explain whats happened and they should change it. if they dont visit amd's webbie and email them

There have been rumors that Sandys were just Toledos with one core deactivated, but I never really believed it... but with you recieving one with a dual-core stepping, I'm wondering just a little bit...

I will back him up on this as i have seen his CPU in action and seen pictures of CPU-Z its nothing to do with cool and quite and it is disabled anyway..This CPU has definately got a faulty core.

From what i can see is that his CPU definately has TOLEDO stepping for some reason but only has one single core
@Ste: if you read the post again about instability.....i sai d that the computer is unstable even at stock speeds

yes i have the latest bios

and yes i have cpuz and i will post a pic of it later

thanks for all the help so far....i may ring AMD tonight and see what they have to say.....if the cpu is one of the stolen ones....then...

I know you did, but your memory can still cause errors at stock speeds if the timings aren't correctly setup/vdimm too low etc. Hence running on a lower divider and or loosening the timings will take this out of the equation.

ive had the computer runnin for 6 months now but with an AMD 64 3500+ Venice....
i just upgraded the cpu to a 3700+
there isnt anything wrong with the ram

thanks for your replys any way
I'd say bad CPU. Stick your 3500 back in and RMA the 3700.

Well he Will and should use the 3500+ for now..But dont simply RMA that CPU talk to AMD as im thinking it may be an important find that AMD should really know about. After that then RMA the CPU or perhaps AMD may deal with it directly if its a serious case.

i would think AMD would take this seriously, as it is a faulty product.. definetly dont just RMA it, its more or less a rare problem. And they might thank you for calling them up right away.

When the ram timming are not correct the computer will not even start.
have you reset the cmos or set everything back to stock
my ram timings have been the same since i got my ram

His RAM is fine as it has worked with all his previous CPU'S as such. Its actaully nothing to do with his mobo settings his CPU is totally unstable.

I know, I was just stating what STE was saying about ram, but if the timmings are wrong the comp will not boot

Yes i have reviewd the Screenshot and as you can see there are alot of greyed out areas Which is obviously not the best of signs anyway. If the core was not faulty i believe that the greyed areass would therefore filled with the appropriate information namely The codename and bus speeds and so on..Lol This is easily one of the most dodgy CPU builds ever..I would love it if it was a Toledo core but the stepping pretty much says it is.
