Help with budget card.

606 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  anyhtinggoes
My buddy saw me playing Dragon Age and now he wants to play it. I have since then scoped out his home PC and have found out it is more than likely bought from Best Buy. Thankfully it's not a horrible PC at all. It has an Asus board, Q8200, 4gb of generic RAM, a crap OEM PSU, and integrated video. Now I have convinced his wife to purchase him a new PSU and card for Christmas and I'll buy him the game. She gave me $200, and I have $50 credit from Tiger Direct that I need to use, so that's where I'll make my purchase. No need to point me to newegg or other sites. So...

$200 budget from Tiger Direct inventory and need a PSU and GPU.

4870 512MB - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...358&CatId=3670

Ultra LSP750 - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...Sku=ULT-LSP750

Just a quick look around and found this. If you wait for BF sales you can probably do better. Yes, I'm aware the Ultra LSP750 is not the greatest, 45A, but it's got enough power where that setup + 4870 will never push it far enough to be an issue.

Thanks, That leaves $25 left from her budget so I can go ahead and upgrade to the 1gb version of the 4870 (here) and still wind up $10 under the budget since everything ships free.

I would wait until tomorrow to see if TD gives any good deals though. You never know! Might land a 4890, or a better PSU.

I don't have the money transferred though so I'll probably miss out even then

Ahhh... then a 4870 1GB + the Ultra PSU would probably be a great buy.

Again, it's not the best PSU. It's no Corsair
but it will do the job.

So apparently TD sold out of the 4870s 1gb versions. Now they only have 512 version from XFX. I'm glad they informed me instead of taking my money and adding credit. So....The 5770 is a tad too high to stay under $200 so I suppose it's down to a 5750 for $154 or a 4870 512mb for $139. I'll be glad to hear your guys opinions, or other recommendations.

Good combo within $200 budget. Too bad they don't have Corsair 550vx. Also you can take a look at the OCZ 600w, 42a on 12v.

I can't win for losing. That PSU has now went up to 69.99 instead of $44 and the card went to $139 instead of $129. That would put it $9 over the limit.

How much better is the 4870 512mb than the 5750 1gb?

The 4870 is about equal to the 5770, but lacks DX11 support (which you will probably want later on).

get the Ultra psu http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...IN#detailspecs

or the corsair 450vx that you're running http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...IN#detailspecs

AND the 5770 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...023&CatId=3669

Use your $50 credit for your buddy & tell him "now you can play dragon age, go buy it." This is a much better solution than cutting corners with the system just so you can buy him the game (have to come up with an extra $10
). It may not have the same pizazz right out of the box but he'll thank you in the long run for doing it this way. 5770 is one of the best budget cards out right now. I think the 5750 is overpriced for what it is, which is 9800gtx+/gts 250 level performance. If you're not getting the 5770 go with gts 250 and save some coin. A gpu in that performance range (5750) is not really going to be taking advantage of dx11.

Too late for that, I already bought the game.....It would be over $250 anyway.

I guess I'm open to other sites as long as you don't have to have a credit card attached to paypal (Newegg). Then again TD ships free right now so there probably won't be much of a better option.

I noticed this PSU which is a step down from the one suggested earlier which should be powerful enough for a single card. It's only $37.99 so that leaves $162.

I just found the XFX 4870 1gb for $149 listed on their site. I'm going to call them and make sure that it's still in stock.

Thanks for the help.
