Hi guys, i have discovered a problem with my father in laws video card. i think that it is overheating and either crashing or going into a fail safe. he likes to play an older game (soldier of fortune 2) so he isnt ever really stressing it, but i have tried to play more intense games lately that truthfully arent even that taxing, i mean they are no crysis. i have tried mass effect, me2, never winter nights 1 and 2, oblivion, lord of the rings online, and a bunch of other games. every game i play everything will run fine and then after a few mins of playing the screen goes black, as if the monitory looses signal, (well it is loosing signal it says so on the monitor) but i can still hear some sound in the background. the only way to get out of this is to hard reboot the system. so i think his old gt220 is getting over heated with newer games, if you guys agree and think this could be the issue could someone explain to me how to underclock it? i have tried evga precicion x but i dont think it worked as the games still crash. and i have updated the drivers also. any help would be greatly appreciated, i have a+ certification and can learn most of anything i need to do by reading most peoples forum questions like tutorials but i cant find any that work for me. thanks yall.

I can not help with the under-clocking, here is a GPU program I found on OCN
that will check your GPU Temps..

The reason I am asking some of these question is to help the next person who
may ask the same questions

1. Have you done any overclocking?
2. Re-seat video card?
3. Re-seat your ram also..
4. Install GPU software and see what your actual temps are and report here.
5. Could be another problem but lets do this first before going on and maybe someone will
come along and help..

well the log that i exported was a bit confusing if i posted it but the thing that struck me was it said fan speed was 0%?

gpu core clock 625.9 mhz
gpu memory clock 324.0mhz
gpu shader clock 810 mhz
gpu temperature 55.0 C
fan speed 0%

i will open her up and re seat everything and blow any dust out, id like to see if the fan is running also. if the fan went out im going to have to buy another card huh?

Try this first...Fan Speed 0 is a good indication...
Cleaning will help...
Make sure when blowing fans make you something so they do not spin (pencil-pen)

so i opened it up and re seated the video card, i also unplugged the fan from the card and blew out any dust, plugged it back into the card and got the dust out of the fan. i got the rest of the dust out of the case also. the fan started working, im not 100% sure it wasn't working before but im pretty sure it wasn't, i think i had it open before and didnt see it running. gpu-z still says fan speed 0% not sure why but i just played lord of the rings online on ultra high graphics with no frame rate lag at all and the game looks great, pretty impressive for that little nvidia gt 220. thanks for your help man!

also, the case sounds louder so im pretty sure the fan wasn't working before... what could cause that? too much dust?

lol...Too much dust. Cat/Dog/furnace maybe. Case sitting on floor.

If it has been longer than a year than at least that much..
Some people that I know every 3 months. Have a schedule and stick to it

needed just like with our cars. They are great when they work but when they do not, then look-out...
I ask my friends if there computer died today can they afford to lose everything...Remember Backup

I clean my cases evey month. The more you open it the more you will be familiar with it and the parts.
It belongs to you, do not be afraid to open the case...jmo
You should keep and eye on that fan..Maybe unplug it and plug it in again if you can get
to plug. This may get it to start reading again.
If not then start looking around for another card, then if this card stops working you will know what
to buy...

yeah i am a+ certified, basicly building computer certification and repair and i used to work at compuzone building custom built rigs but this problem just stumped me as i never really have had issues with video cards before, at least not physical problems.

Stay around if you can, this site or there are others will test your skills. You will be a help. There are a lot of people that do not
have the skills your have.

Remember how your thread started, you asked for help and I backed off...Only telling you what I knew only.
Then as I listened to what you wrote I was able to understand what you were needing...
