Help with Windows XP reformat

Well my dad's computer recently freaked out so I'm reinstalling XP, but I'm having a problem. I type in the product key, and it doesn't work...I know for a fact that this is a legit key, its on the sticker on the back of his computer that I built for him. However, the disk I have is a home burned one from a friend and above the spaces to put in the CD key it says "Windows XP Professional Upgrade"...do I have like an upgrade disk or something? Do I need another disk, like a regular OEM XP Pro or something?

HELP. lol.

you have the upgrade cd.
If the cdkey on the pc says its for the pro version you need the pro install version.

What kind of message do you get? Have you tried calling them to have it activated that way?

You make it sound easy but I have no idea how to do any of those things...I'm not the greatest when it comes to software.
