<br />
(Pic of an ad in BF2142 with HUD turned off).<br />
<br />
<br />
(Refer to <a href="http://www.overclock.net/news-overclockers/124482-bf2142-embeded-spyware-adware.html" target="_blank">http://www.overclock.net/news-overcl...re-adware.html</a>)<br />
<br />
EDIT: <br />
<br />
The topic title is sarcastic btw. My opinion on this is that the ads do not really harm anyone and can even be considered atmospheric. <br />
<br />
BTW to anyone who doesn't know, the "spyware" does not monitor anything at all except what ads you look at in the game, for how long, and at what angle. The spyware only runs while you are playing the game, and does nothing close to monitoring your browser surfing. In fact it does not even tell anyone who is looking at the ads, just that someone is looking at them. So if you look at the ad, the program will just +1 to the number of views on the ad, it won't actually tell anyone that you specifically are looking at a specific ad. This really is as harmless as can be and I have no idea why anyone would whine about it.<br />
<br />
And as for the pic, I have no idea if it is fake or not, it's not mine.

Yeop, I agree 100% I absolutely HATE this crap and its the sole reason I will not buy that game. And that sucks b/c I had JUST recently gotten back into Battlefield 2 immensely, I had DL the demo for 2142 and even though I didnt think it was the greatest I was really wanting to get that game with all the unlocks and stuff. But they can forget it now.

</div>It's just a billboard advert? Its not like a popup that kicks you back to desktop and screams "BY MI STUF!!!1!1". Just ignore it <img src="/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)" class="inlineimg" /><br />
<br />
To me it adds a sense of realism to a game like this. Its not so far removed from the real world it becomes unbelievable.

I hate hearing that argument though man, that it adds realism. Thats just not true for this game. THIS game is supposed to be set in the future. Its supposed to be in the middle of an ice age where people are killing everyone JUST to have some land to grow corn on. I highly, highly doubt that Pepsi would still be alive and kicking if this were the case. Its stupid. And even if you say "well maybe Pepsi" isnt arround anymore and its a left over sign" then I would respond with "then why the hell does the thing look brand spanking new and have no wear and tear at all?"<br />
<br />
it just RUINS the immersion for this type of game if you ask me, not to mention the fact that its bright as anything when everything else in the game is dull and drab.<br />
<br />
But anyway, aside from ruining the immersion my biggest problem is this. For people who dont know any better EA screws them royally. Yeah they put a discalimer inside the packaging, INSIDE !!! It states if you dont want this spyware on your PC dont install the game. Well unfortunelately once you've opened the box (which you have to see the disclaimer) its to late to return the game to get your money back. Its completely twisted by EA and I hope they burn for it !

My question is this, even with all the PURE HATRED I have for EA, and even as much as I am against this I might still buy the thing. I know that makes me sound like such a hypocrite but damnit I love these Battlefield games. Anyway could this thing cause harm to my computer? or cause it to run slower?

the other problem with this is the boards are undamagable! so your blowing crap out of everything but good old pepsi and other advertizeres boards wont get a scratch!<br />
In todays games where dx10 is only around the corner and games like crysis where everything is able to get blown up destroyed etc we have EA and its greed! , and that is all it is , greed , as the savings from the money they generate dont get passed on to us!.<br />
to be honest with the welth of sport titles EA has , if they want advertizing why not do it in there billboards on and around the field where it doesnt look out of place!<br />
rant over !<img src="/images/smilies/gunner2.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Gunner2" class="inlineimg" />

I honestly do not have a problem with this. Big deal. How immersed can you be in a game whre you are 140 years in the future with an ice age? How does this really affect your playing experience? People are just in the habit of ripping on corporations. Without them, the economy would suck....end of story.

</div>Im sorry but I cannot stand this. Because you are in 140 years in the future you have to try harder to feel immersed anyways. And having a friggin huge pepsi billboard does not help whatsoever.<br />
<br />
The way they put the ads there with the spyware crap is just plain annoying.<br />
<br />
The only time there should ever be ads in games are for sports games like in football stadiums because that makes it feel more realistic.

IF, and its a big if, they were to make the adds look war torn it wouldnt be quite as bad. But it would still be wrong I believe. Think about it, when is the last time you drove through a big city or a country village and the ONLY thing you see that has ANY writting on it period was a bill board. Thats dumb. I dont know how to explain this but Im trying.<br />
<br />
Ok its like the ONLY thing that looks like its "real" or has any "life" to it is these bill boards, and NOTHING else does. So you see that in and of itself ruins the immersion, even if it were fake futuristic billboards.<br />
<br />
And here is my reasoning why EA will never make them look War Torn anyway. Do you guys remember the Gran Turismo games on Playstation? And almost ANY race car game. Since the dawn of video games if you used a "real world" sponsor half the time they wouldnt allow you to show their "product" damaged. I remember you could flip your car a hundred times and it still would look brand spanking new. And I gauruntee you its the same with these adds, they will NEVER look war torn b/c I bet its against the agreement EA made with these companies.

I have played this game for 7 hours, been to every map, and i have NOT seen this billboard....all the boards i have seen are drap and look very much like they belong....THey dont; even appear to be for products...they have initials on them sich as ER and RA.....<br />
<br />
I think this picture is photoshopped and the thread starter is a troll...i have looked all over the internet for an article detailing this gharish pepsi billboard. I have found nothing, which seems highly unlikely if it did exist, because this thing stands out....<br />
<br />

Well I dont think its photoshoped EA states in the packaging of the game they do this. Maybe you just didnt notice it I dont know. Personally I dont care whether or not its real. Either way eventually you WILL see the adds b/c EA says so themselves.

If the ads are indeed genuine (and not photoshop'ed) I agree they shouldn't be in a game you already pay for. EA should offer a discounted version with ads, or a full price version without them, or no ads at all. If the ads are out of context with the game's environment, as seems to have been suggested in this thread, then that makes their inclusion in the game even worse.<br />
<br />
I believe you shouldn't have to be subjected to <i>real-world</i> advertising in a product you have paid for, full stop. Fake ads for non-existent products, made by non-existent companies, such as those in games like the GTA series are fine, as they do add a certain level of realism. Real advertising however, especially if it is out of context, is pretty unacceptable and imo, it's use in games is a fairly disreputable method of obtaining additional profits.<br />
<br />
I guess the bottom line is; that if you don't like ads in your paid-for games, don't buy them. If enough people stop buying EA games and EA's market research suggests the fall in sales is because of advertising in games, EA will drop the ads, it's that simple. If you truly hate the advertising, don't buy the games that feature it.<br />

This could start an game revolition where instead of sony's ps4 we'll see coke station and the pepsi box ant he game devolpers that stay true and have no ads die out becuz of lack of funds. OR the opisite this could cause people to stop buying games that have ads and the devopers that sold out die.
