Hey how's it goin? I was referred to this site from someone on steampowered.com forums, which isn't exactly a reliable place for information.

I've been browsing the forums for a few days, made a few posts here and there, but never formally said hello.

I'm 25 and have been around computers for about as long as I can remember. I can remember logo writer in school. Right turn 90, forwards 300, right turn....etc etc.

I remember this monochromatic graphic display my Dad would show me on some old little box...I don't remember what it was. A 4 or 5 frame showing a bunch of horses running. I thought that was so amazing.

He brought home that little Mac one day, that thing was great. X's and O's football. I remeber I think I crashed it and all that would show up was a little mac with an unhappy face.

Fast forward a little. The ImagineNetwork. Dynamix games. Aces Over Europe on floppy. Doom on floppy. Local BBS's. Mom yelling at me for long distance calls. I didn't realize that just because I'm calling within my area code doesn't mean I'm free of any fees. Sysops and SysAdmin. BBS guys complaining of losing users to AOL. WildCat BBS. the Jump from 9600bps to 28.8bps was great! The jump to 56K was astronomical! Look at that text SCROOLL!! Legend of the Red Dragon. Forums! Compuserve, Prodigy, Delphi.

33mhz. I loved that 486. I was mastering DOS while my mom waved a mouse at the screen and wondered aloud what she was doing wrong, why wasn't the pointer moving? SVGA monitors! The golden age of CD-Rom gaming. Dune. Carmageddon. My local video store rented PC CD-ROMS!!

I got a Pentium 3 933mhz for college. That lasted me well. It was a dell. It's virus laden and corupt beyond anything now. An ex handed me her Dad's computer, which is now what I posess. I've upgraded it to 1 gig of RAM, and threw in a pretty nice video card. There are way better out there, but I think if I just had a faster CPU Half Life 2 would run incredibly smooth.

I can't imagine having a 3ghz cpu right now, though it's the norm for many people.

I'd have to say I'm thoroughly impressed with the site. I'm thinking about waiting til Dual Core becomes more widespread, buying a 3 giga something regular p4, overclocking it, and sitting there, watching amazing graphics scroll by at a nice 80 fps, sitting satisfied I saved money and tinkered with some technology.

I'm seeing Half Life 2 on TV and its so smooth. I'm just happy I can play it.

Anyway, nice to meet you all. I'll have plenty of questions for sure.

Welcome aboard

I used AOL and I'm pretty sure it was called "The ImagineNetwork" It was put out by Dynamix I think. I used to play the original Red Baron online.

Aside from browsing AOL's servers, there was M.A.I.N. The Morris Automated Information Network, which is still in operation today. I was able to log into my counties' library network, and browse the web, text only. Back in 1994, text only web wasn't that bad. I couldn't imagine what it would be today. At 9600bps no less. Yikes!

I made fun of Prodigy people. "Prodigy Sucks!, AOL is way better!"
What can I say I was 13
