well, my memory isnt bottlenecking... my cpu isnt bottlenecking... yet my north-bridge overheats plenty.
i cant boot past 2.78ghz (398fsb) and it not stable past 2.66ghz... though i can undervolt the cpu and its still stable at 2.66ghz.

im running the F5 bios which is the latest for the 965G gigabyte DS3 board.
im going to get a nice little copper cooler for my northbridge with a 40mm fan on it rather than passive cooling...

anyone have any ideas as to what is holding back my overclock? im thinking i may as well just leave it at 2.66ghz and get quad core if it seems affordable. i overvolted what my bios calls the "fsb" and the "mch" overvoltage... doesnt really seem to help much, even when i have one of my 80mm fans blowing directly on the northbridge to cool it (feels only room temperature to the touch)

any input is appreciated... i cant hit 400fsb for some reason!

Yea.. You might pick up a good PSU. OCZ, Antec and Seasonic are my preferred brands.

You got the 965G-DS3?

If you did, bad luck buddy, don't even try and overclock.

ha yea... thats what i thought. i ordered the 965P but they sent me the 965G. i wanted to send it back but my dad refuses to let me since my computer works
and no i dont know how hot the rails get, but i highly doubt theyre the problem since the air coming out of the back of my power supply rarely even gets warm.

its a 600watt and its got dual 12V at 22A... those are fair specs. not the best, but its plenty for overclocking a core 2 duo.
in fact, i overclocked my old x2 3800+ on the worse 550watt rosewill psu with dual 12V at 18A and got that to 2.6ghz 1.55V and this psu is better and i havent even overvolted the cpu yet.

oh and i forgot to mention that 550watt was running a 7900gtx 702/1780 lol.. my 7800gt uses a fraction of the power that the 7900gtx does... in fact i replaced a power supply when i got my 7900gtx just because of that.

Its probably cuz you have the G version of that board which usually indicates on board video, which is usually controlled by the north bridge. So it sounds like your NB is getting too hot. I'd just return it because it is not what your paid for . If your dad is giving you problems just ask him if he bought a 50" tv online and they sent him a 30" one would he keep it because it works?

Do you still have any chance to RMA that board? It's not right if you ordered one thing and they send you another.

Wait, how can you tell if your northbridge is getting too hot? There aren't any temperature monitors on it... will it just cause instability and lock-ups?

What do you have your G(MCH) @ right now? try +0.1 and see if that helps any.

EDIT, reread first post, looks like you've tried that. What kind of G.Skill do you have? Did you try something like 430 off the bat?
