All the hype and excitement of looking forward to Diablo III has made me look back fondly at my early teen years and what was in my humble opinion the greatest few years gaming has ever seen or ever will see.

Just look at that list. In 4 years we had 12 games that will be known until the end of freaking time. 12 games that every single gamer on the face of the planet has heard about. Honestly there are even a few more that I left out but could have put in there.

I DARE anyone to find me 4 years of gaming (pref PC gaming) that can come remotely close to touching those 4 years. Try, you will fail

You've got a good point there. Unreal Tournament made me late for school on multiple occasions.

You forgot Quake III December 2. 1999.

Happens to the best of us. I was going to mention Soldier of Fortune, but it didn't seem to catch on like the games you listed. I still love it though

Quake 2 DM was amazing.. But HL was perfection. Remember the enemy AI? Remember playing Half Life DM on a 56k modem at 15-20 FPS?? Boy did it take patience to play back in the day.. Now these console kiddies can't deal with a slight modification to BF3 or getting disconnected from a server.. Back then you could still own a DM or Rocket Arena match with a 200 ping and a graphics card stressed to the max.. That was what true PC gaming was about, not this new instant grat/ console mentality.

One game that gets no recognition was SHOGO- one of my favorite games of all time... I would also add No One Lives Forever to that list.

Monolith was vastly under rated as a game developer.. They could never get their netcode right which really hurt their long term viability on the the above mentioned games,

You forgot Everquest. It set the standard that the entire mmo industry would follow.

Counter Strike definitely needs to be on there... when did the first Half Life game come out, late 90s?

Master of Orion 2 and Civ 2.. crack back in the day. Half-life was 98 I think.

To this day, the most fun I've ever had gaming was cs 1.6 scrimming with 4 other friends. So many laughs, amazing moments, just general fun. Nothing even comes close.

Definitely worthy of being on the list IMO.
Was one of my absolute favorite shooters back then; first time I blew off a limb with a shotgun I knew they had something good going on

Kingpin was good too, lots of violence and a Cypress Hill soundtrack lol

Jedi Knight came out in 1997. Easily my #1 Star Wars game. and X-Wing Alliance came out in 1999, definitely an awesome space sim Id put up there with Freespace. And dude, Red Alert came out in 1996...easily the best RTS of all time. Great era though, 96-2000. Ah and Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear were top notch as well. Geez too many games to count that I spent so many hours on!
