How Do You Remove GPU Drivers

1429 Views 26 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Penicilyn
ok, im replacing my crysis killing 8800GT in my sig with a gainward 4850.

Now how do you make sure that you remove all the old Nvidia drivers before installing the ATi drivers??? is it just a case of Control panel -> Programs and features -> Uninstall nV drivers?

isn't there a free software that will make sure all the old stuff is removed?

also another question, when i install my 4850,, do i straight away install the latest Ati drivers from the website?

You want to uninstall them first the way you mentioned.

Then run a program called Driver Cleaner Pro and have it remove any nvidia drivers present.

Then restart and install ATI drivers.
Yes, manually uninstall everything. Then go to C:\\Program Files and delete the folders pertaining to nVidia. Then run Driver Cleaner Pro: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/de...leaner_pro.cfm

Well there's no official way to test it but.... I would download a copy of ATI tool then have it scan for artifacts for say a half hour.

Now your GPU temps will go through the roof as this card runs quite hot on the stock cooler. My card has seen 110C quite a few times but no worries, it's designed to run uber hot.

You're gonna wanna reformat.
Unless you only want half of what the HD4850 can do.

Probably about 120C? Not really sure but I've never heard of one dying yet.

Not if he does a proper driver wipe he wont.

I went from a 8800GTS to my 4850 with no performance issues.

ok, i unistalled everything to do with nvidia on my computer inculding the drivers.

now i restarted my computer into vista, and checked the nvidia folder in program files. its still contains all the previous driver parts,in folders, i installed i.e. 182., 178. whatever , etc and they are full.

is it suppossed to be like that, even after uninstalling the drivers??

Yep, they've been removed from your system32 folder but the install folders are there. You can just delete those if you want.

Now you'll want to download the Cat 9.2's

well you'll want to download the cat's now, then swap in the new card. then run the drivers.

Incorrect. Aslong as the Nvidia Drivers are removed and Driver cleaner is used to remove all other traces of the old drivers then he will be fine.

How would there be a driver conflict?

There's no nvidia drivers left on your computer.
