How is i5 [email protected] performance?

Just wondering, kinda thinking about a upgrade on my current 775 hardware.

To be honest your setup right now is just on par with a i5 750 setup. At least in all the performance charts i have seen. As far as folding goes i do not think there will be a much differences unless you went with a 1156 processor with hyper threading.
[email protected] doesnt make use of ht anyways I believe, but when I had my i5 750 folding I was getting around 3k ppd running 3-4 instances of the standard windows client (not the console client). I was told though using linux you could get over twice that with an i5 (at 4ghz).
hmm really thats a shame. Then i would suggest following the advice of the gentlemen or gentlewomen above.

but i did come up with this thread

http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...-0-8-core.html

on 8 core folding.

Yeah, keep your current setup, will be equal, and perhaps even faster, 4.3Ghz is a very clock

Running multiple instances solves this problem. Since VMware and Virtual box support 4 or 8 cores, there would be a some gain in ppd but not worth the money. It could be better allocated with GPUs.

I just jumped to an 860 i7 on the 1156 platform and it folds very well. I put up a little over 10K ppd folding 7 threads using the above mentioned vmware 3.0 with the bigadv setup. 10K is on the big WU (25K). Jumped my output to over 20K ppd total with my pair of gts250s folding along with it. Just got it running a couple days ago, can't wait to post my first 25K WU to EOC...

I cant wait to see it either. I like seeing the people that jump by 50k points every few days... kind of funny looking on the graphs compared to most people's.

We are finally overtaking TSC Russia again. Lets get passed them with our i7 folders.

But for the OP, go i7 with 8 threads, or keep what you have and grab a good folding card. (the 275 co-op seemed to be a good ppd/$ card. 16k I think... and it could pair up with your current card.)

Your current OC is very nice, I dont think you would see much benefit unless you went with a cpu capable of 8 threads.

Devil- If you really want some folding power, I'd say save a bit longer and go for an i7 920 setup. Especially if you have a microcenter nearby and pickup an openbox i7 mobo. Thats what I did and how I was able to afford i7.
Should have asked mike. My i5 should get around the same ppd as your quad. When the i5 is folding by itself, it gets around 8500ppd at 4.3ghz. I haven't really tested it or monitored it much by itself, since I always have the gtx 260 folding as well and it takes priority.

As mentioned above, a chip with HT would be the way to go if you want more ppd. If you insist on an 1156 chip, the X3440 is a good option that includes HT. I've seen it for $200 new on ebay and you can always get that bing cashback. The only drawback to the X3440 is that it has lower stock clocks, around 2.55ghz. Other than that, the 860 is a little more pricey, even with a microcenter nearby.

Then there is always a 920. It just comes down to how much money you want to spend right now. I don't think that getting an i5 would be any sort of upgrade from what you have right now. If anything, it'd be for the sake of trying something new.

Yep, that's pretty much it.
