I made an impulse buy on an MSI open box 260gtx from the egg a few minutes ago.
I also plan on using an i5 and oc'ing to around 3.8ghz-4.0ghz. Since there's no ht it might save some power. Also I'll be using a single Intel ssd which might save some power.
I have this HIGH QUALITY earth watts psu.
It seems to have enough amps on the 12v rails. I know this power this "power issue" has been blown out of proportion in the past before.
If someone could give me a good answer I would be grateful + rep.
1.) Would I be good for a second 260 gtx?
2.) This is kind of unrelated but my new mobo is p55. Apparently p55 only supports x8/x8 on the pci-e lanes with SLI. In reality would I notice a performance hit? I know I might with say sli 295gtxs, but in this case I'm thinking I'd be just under the bottleneck.
thats equals to be 620, excluding CD drives, fans and Harddrives
I think to be safe, get a 700 watt or a 750 since you are going to be overclocking it a lot. If you werent I would say a 650 would suffice since a STOCK i5 uses 184 watts at load.
Once you overclock it to around 4.0 ghz the wattage jumps to the high 200's
I tested my gaming rig awhile ago with a wall meter. The system has an OC'd E8600, 4gb RAM, 2 260s, 3 HDDs, and 6 scythe s-flex's.
At the wall the meter peaked at 500w while the system was folding on both GPUs. That is typically a higher load than you will see while gaming, but obviously lower than any i7 runs.
At idle the rig was running between 245-255watts.
1. You should be fine with your PSU.
2. The lower 8x/8x shouldnt hurt you with this setup either. Enjoy the new GPU!

I was checking those out the other day. The only problem is that it requires 2 plugs, so you need 2 different outlets in 2 different zones of the house. That way you dont blow a fuse.
I didnt feel like buying a long extension cord, so I just settled with a quality Corsair 750W unit.
