How much can you OC a Amd 165 Opteron ?

Hey there people. I am planning on building a system with a Amd opteron 165 denmark in it. I have been looking at newegg and it seems oem model comes with more L1 cashe. My goal is 3ghz what do you think I can hit with these specs.

DFI LANPARTY nF4 SLI-DR
AMD Opteron 165 Denmark 1GHz FSB 2 x 1MB L2 Cache 128kbL1 Cashe per core
OCZ Titanium 2GB (2 x 1GB)
Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000 RPM
eVGA Geforce 7800GT
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS

Help me decide on the heatsink also, Ive been looking at a few but I want the best to try and get that 3ghz stable

I am leaning towards a dual core opteron for OC later down the line. up to a fx-60 performance, because neweggs oem 165 opteron has 128kb+ 128kb L1 cache. That means if I can get it up to 2.8GHZ(Or 3 ) it will be Identical to a 1300$ CPU ?. Maybe 3ghz is possible... with OCing, tweaking. I not overclock till at least the warranty runs out. What do you think...

almost 100% positive you wont hit 3ghz overclock with a opt 165 but nothing is impossible... I would say you should aim for 2.6ghz - 2.8ghz being your best possible overclock especially if your just going with Air cooling,,,

its a good proccessor and can most likely run up to 2.6ghz and get you right up there near those FX-60 speeds,,,

the L2 cache for the OEM and the Retail is exactly the same and you should probably do some research with the search feature on others results with the opteron 165,,,

good luck

I was talking about L1 cashe
The L1 cache is the same...it's probably just a misprint or the spec's are shown in a different format. You will not get to 3.0ghz. You should plan on setting a goal of 2.6-2.7 for your daily use. 2.8 for benching if you like that sort of thing.

Do not focus on L1 cache when selecting a processor, L2 cache is the performance booster.
is 3ghz on your venus stable?
I was looking at getting a 165 a day or so ago and decided to save the cash and get a 148... but I saw a thread somewhere where they were getting to 2.8 w/ the 165's so that would be something to aim for.

take a look at my thread about a 3700 or 148 and you'll see it... we got off topic and started looking into dual core cpus too.

Your setup looks nice with 3GHZ, you think I could get a 148 OPTERON Chip off newegg, OC with my partS get the 148 from the egg up to 3.0+ GhZ ? But instead get the same heatsink as you cuz i can see its good... thx for inspiration
well I ordered a 148 from newegg on sunday... they shipped it already so I can try to remember to post what stepping it is when I get it

Dr. l337, you changed the name of your topic from 3800x2 to opty 165. Now i'm gonna have to edit my previous post
. The 165 would probably get to the same speeds the 3800 will, but the 165 has double the cache
.
I posted on your AMD build thread, and in a day will set you up with an ultimate system for less than what you want to spend.....I'm just not in a good mood tonight...stupid HD's

okay, I just purchased a Opty165.

I am replacing my Athlon X2 3800+ running at 2.6GHZ dual prime 95 stable with it. I have2x1GB DDR500 ram, Biostar Tforce4U board and a 7900GT.

Currently, I can hit about 6877 in 3dmark06 and 101,000+ in Aquamark3.

I have a complete Swiftech liquid cooled system, so I think after burn ins, 3.0GHZ could be quite easy. I can hit 2.7GHZ with my 3800+, but it will fail withen about 6 hours of Prime 95 running dual.

I havent updated my website in forever... Here's a little shot of my other box, hopefulyl I can get scores, screenshots and general pix from the large box up too:

I ordered today, should be running by wednesday!

uh..... welcome to the forum, make your own thread as it will work better and confuse us less

Heh, I tend to beat people up on my forum about doing that... But fine, I will once I post the new pix.
I just ordered my Opt 165 today from newegg. They been sending out some great stepping in the past couple days. Here is a stepping chart

Known good steppings that are capable of 3ghz:
CCB1E 0550VPMW
CCBWE 0550UPMW (Some are crappy actually)
CCB1E 0605XPMW
CCB1E 0606VPMW
CCB1E 0608MPMW
CCB1E 0609FPAW
CCB1E 0609FPMW
CCBBE 0610DPMW<--NEWEGG passing out
CCBBE 0615EPMW
CCBBE 0617FPMW<--NEWEGG passing out

Honorable Mention:
CCBWE 0530TPMW (2.9ghz avg.)
CCBWE 0546XPMW (2.85ghz avg.)
CCBWE 0609FPAW (Unconfirmed precise averages, but seems to be 2.8-2.9)

AVOID if you want to hit 2.8ghz+:
CCBWE 0534SPMW
CCBWE 0543TPMW
CCBWE 0546MPMW
CCBWE 0551 (Any packing code) (2.7-2.75ghz 1.55v)
CCBWE 0602 (Any packing code)
CCBWE 0607 (Any packing code) (2.65ghz 1.55v)

Mine shipped out today, I plan on checking that stepping first thing
Did the same with my Athlon, Newegg has been good to me, havent gotten a bad one yet.

Biostar was all uptight about saying if the Tforce 4U supports it, they cant say it does, but they did say they have reports of it running >.<

My 165 = CCBWE 0604 TPMW = 2.7GHz (270 X 10) @ 1.50V (not my sig machine)

96 hours dual stressprime stable (folding machine)

Full load temps are 45C with a Big Typhoon Cooler.

You might able to hit 3 ghz if you get some nice air cooling.
and have alot voltage under the hood
