How much of an improvement over my current rig will I see if I go:

Core i5
eVGA P55 FTW
Patriot Sector 5 DDR3-1600

I'm a gamer, general user and currently trying to get some music recording going. Think this $650 upgrade is worth it?

Noticeable improvement, yes. Worth $650, no. Ultimately only you can decide if it will be worth it. I can tell you right now real world usage the difference isn't going to be massive, although benchmarks may be another story.

I went from a dual core to a quad core (i7) and the difference was night and day, and you're doing a similar step up. So I'd say you'll see a big difference.
