Basically my question is how much RAM i need/want.
I'm in the midst of buying a new system, and i have no idea how much RAM i would need. Obviously i game, but i also do light photoshop and video editing on vegas.
The consensus is that a 2x4GB kit of DDR3-1600 RAM is the baseline for a modern system. You can always get faster RAM (1866 / 2133 / 2400) but it's not strictly necessary, nor is having 16GB.
Using 8gb is enough. Get a 2x4gb kit and you ll be fine. 1600 is the minimum and u can go up 2400 with ivy for some performance gain. What you ll choose depends on your budget as usual.
I would say 16gb [4x4]. Why ? Vegas is ram hungry and eats cpu power like that. Games like crysis 2 with dx11 and hi-res pack on all utra on 1080p use about 5-6 gb of ram so 8 gb for gaming is enough.
Ram is twice the price it was half a year ago at the moment.
I recommend you wait it out until the price drops again. But other than that yea 8gb is the sweet spot.
There's nothing "wrong" with that model of RAM, provided that you run it at the advertised speeds via its XMP profile. Just don't expect to overclock it beyond that, though.
I would recommend 12GB if your going to do some high video editing. For some average editing 8 and baby editing 4GB.When it comes to gaming its always 4+.
