if you could have only 1 which 1 would it be?

how much would it cost to make a computer more powerfull than a next gen console?

im just curious to see if anybody knows what graphics card (and cpu's) are equivalent to the chips in the ps3 and xbox 360. i cannot find any benchmarking software that has been adapted for the consoles and the diffences would make them irrelevent but in terms of gameplay, fps lighting AA etc what would be needed to beat a console?

please dont turn this thread into a console bashing thread :swearing: i feel we need to know how much it would cost to turn a family pc into an up to date complete family entertainment system.

Your hardware is already better than a console. The difference is that your computer runs an OS made for lots of things whereas a console's sole purpose is games. The games are also coded differently which makes them look optimized for the console, but the same graphics on a PC would be unsatisfactory.
another thing that is overlooked is the console can be pluged into massive screen and not flinch, whereas a computer can stugle at higher resolutions. (excuse my terrible graphics card btw, new one on monday) what would it take for a pc to perform aswell as a console in gaming?

For your computer, and for higher resolutions, you may want to look at getting a GTX260 216 or 4870 1gb and another 2gb of RAM.

A feature that you don't notice on consoles is that they blur the backgrounds since they can't display that much quality at once. That feature on a PC makes the image look like poo.

Once again, you can't really compare the two. A big screen TV is big size wise, but the resolution is at most probably 1920xwhatever. I run games on my 40" 1080p TV on all full settings without any problems. And they look 10x better than their console counterparts.

Plugging a console into a larger screen does not necessarily mean you are increasing it's resolution, often just the size of the screen. You can do the same with a computer.

You can't exactly compare the two, as they don't play the same things. Like the previous poster said, optimizations favor the console. But as far as hardware goes, it would take (off the top of my head) about $500 for a respectable, full computer and accessories to match/beat a console.

how hiensight of you, i typed this post and refreshed before i posted it. you got the budget bang on!
i got enough from the sale of my nintendo wii to put this rig together and i would never look back, @ 650 core clock and 550 memory i can play crysis on medium and cod4 on max but im fiending for more and im getting a gts250 but i have to build a couple of more systems for foster children with a budget of £500 monitor os and periferals included + a cut for me which makes it around £450 because im kind lol i just want them to be capable of stoping them talking about gamer scores and stop that jet engine noise from the next room that is the xbox 360's. you think a kuma 7750 be and a 9600gt can do it?
a 7900gtx is wat the ps3 is using but it dont have dx10
Even though consoles say they display games at 1080p, for the most part that's not true. Some games aren't even 720p because the consoles can't run them smoothly. COD comes to mind...it's something like 576p that's upscaled to 720p.
thats nice to know
I'd love to run 3D mark 06 on a PS3 and XBOX 360 just to see what the scores would be.

Consoles are holding the whole games industry graphically back

I think there is an analog vs. digital difference here. The console tends to send a signal that can be stretched, where as the computer sends one that can be defined do the very pixel. I am obviously not educated in this matter, but the console doesn't convert the image (via video) while it is optimized to run on any mode given in HDMI at the same settings.

Now, computers however, are different and waaaaay better looking. I played Halo the other day on my HDTV, and I wanted to just turn it off because of how laggy and ugly the picture was compared to CSS on my computer.

Also, GOW looks like a winner on PC too, PC games will always look sharper.

And console games will always be sort of laggy like that, because they are given that hardware and nothing else, all the companies can do is just code the thing and optimize it different.

im pretty impressed at how cheap it would be to turn the standard family pc into a kick ass gaming rig, if you think of it like that the cost of a new psu and graphics card is a cheaper and better alternative to a ps3 or xbox, also more reliable, if only more people would listen. then maybe we would have more than 1 graphically demanding game (crysis)
More reliable? Since when? Unlike PCs, comcoles don't need upgrading every two years in order to play the newest games. If you bought an Xbox360 when it came out, guess what? You can STILL play the newest games, even though it's older. PCs? If I bought or built a PC 3 years ago, spent 500 bucks, then that PC would have a hard time playing games that have just been released this year, so, you have to go out, and plunk down another bit of cash for the new GPU.

Don't get me wrong. I love both Cosole and PC gaming(thus why I'm upgrading the PC). I simply disagree with this "Holier Than Thou" attitiude most PC gamers have towards Consoles. Heck, look at the PS2. If you bought one when it came out, and took good care of it, it would easily last 5 years(mine has lasted even longer XD). And, from the Ps2's creation, all the way to now, as they STILL make games for it, that same system still doesn't need an upgrade. That is a HUGE leg up on the PC gamer, who would have had to upgrade at LEAST once. Sure, the PS2's graphics aren't anywhere near the PC's, but the PS2 has a LOT of the best games out right now.

...ahhh.... your entire first point is moot. Sure, you can play a "new" game on a 3yr old console.... because you are playing a game made for 3yr old hardware. Your PC can also play games designed for 2-3 generation old hardware as well. Thank the console for holding back the graphics.

the reason consoles can run on high res butn ot flinch is becuase the hardware is DX9 level and the game programers make it so that it will run right at 1080P.

PC are more intense
Holding it back? Last time I checked, at best, the only thing that might be getting held back, is the Console. PC developers are MORE than welcome to design games that actually use PC system's potential, but they don't.

And if games were being held back, why is it that a game released at the beginning of a console cycle(Let's say, Oni, for PS2) has NOTHING in the way of graphics, compared to a game later in the console's life?(Soul Calibur 3, Tekken 5, Xenosaga, Black, Persona).

The idea that games are being held back by consoles is completely invalid. PC developer's simply don't care about actually pushing the envelope in this regard, besides the devs of Crysis. How many games have been made, solely for the PC, by PC devs? And how many of those games surpass 360 graphics by enough to actually matter to anyone besides the videophiles? And better yet, even though the graphics don't LOOK much better, you're STILL having to upgrade your pc system, to play the newest games!

And let's face it. Halo 3 is pretty much every bit as much fun as Crysis,(unless you're just obsessed with having a keyboard, but that's a different discussion, I think), even though Crysis' graphics are sooo much better. And, quite honestly, the graphics on Crysis aren't that much better than games such as Halo 3, or GoW. I've seen all three, and the honest truth is that while playing the game, you don't usually notice the fact that this tree looks a little more lifelike, or this plant reacts a little differently.

I wonder if an OS like Vista could be stripped down and optimized specifically for gaming like the OS on a console. Better yet get those Linux guys to write a Linux based OS specifically for gaming. On topic I think PC gamers are more obsessed with hardware than anything, it's almost addicting, so they really don't mind shelling out the cash for new components. I'd rather be playing on the best hardware available than a console with outdated graphics and hardware. I guess that's what separates console gamers from pc gamers

I think so too.

Are you blind? I was the first person to get Halo 3 so I'm behind Halo 3 100%, but if you think that Halo 3 matches Crysis in graphics you must be off your head. I'm also talking about the detail that you see while playing the game normally, without having to look hard to see the difference in quality.

Consoles also use pretty advanced hardware to upscale the resolution of the game. Many game engines don't render in 1080i, they're upscaled to that level. Halo 3 runs at 1152x640, and is then scaled to the output resolution.

Consoles will always have better quality for the level of hardware that's on them, as the games are tailored EXACTLY for that hardware, and the OS's the consoles run are much lighter.

Sins of a Solar Empire, Civilization 3, any MMORPG, Audio-Surf, Age of Empires (specifically the 3rd one), Empire Total War...

Wait, what? Which one? If you're meant that Crysis is around Halo 3's level, you obviously haven't seen Crysis properly maxed. Also, Halo 3's distance rendering sucks (entire objects get nicked at long range).
