I wanted to learn how the internet works. I have been exploring and reading around for the last few hours and I have a good idea how it works. but I want to learn more. I was wondering if any one has any indepth or detatiled toutorials about the internet. I'm mostly interested in the protocals <TCP/IP is what I think I want to look at> and also more about IP adresses.

I also had a question. While I was reading about switches and routers. I began thinking about what a router dose and I got the idea that a router acts as like a mini DNS server for like your network at home. Is that right?

The protocols take quite a bit to explain for it contains such details like the OSI Model. Each level in the model (it has 7 layers; from Physical to Session, I believe) has special functions and it's easier to understand the protocols if you understand the whole OSI Model.

Edit for the first paragraph: After understanding the OSI Model throughly comes the TCP/IP model.


Router itself is like a small computer. It has CPU, NVRAM, RAM, ROM, PSU, etc. A router contains routing table on its RAM to direct packets in the right direction effectively by choosing the best route for each packet. So, I guess it's kind of like a DNS server, but not nearly as sophisticated.

Some stuff I dug up from my notes from Cisco.

Here you go:

* File Transfer Protocol (FTP) - FTP is a reliable, connection-oriented service that uses TCP to transfer files between systems that support FTP. It supports bi-directional binary file and ASCII file transfers.
* Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) - TFTP is a connectionless service that uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). TFTP is used on the router to transfer configuration files and Cisco IOS images, and to transfer files between systems that support TFTP. It is useful in some LANs because it operates faster than FTP in a stable environment.
* Network File System (NFS) - NFS is a distributed file system protocol suite developed by Sun Microsystems that allows file access to a remote storage device such as a hard disk across a network.
* Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) - SMTP administers the transmission of e-mail over computer networks. It does not provide support for transmission of data other than plain text.
* Telnet - Telnet provides the capability to remotely access another computer. It enables a user to log into an Internet host and execute commands. A Telnet client is referred to as a local host. A Telnet server is referred to as a remote host.
* Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) - SNMP is a protocol that provides a way to monitor and control network devices. SNMP is also used to manage configurations, statistics, performance, and security.
* Domain Name System (DNS) - DNS is a system used on the Internet to translate domain names and publicly advertised network nodes into IP addresses.

pick up a book or search google for Cisco's ICND 2.0 training. It should cover pretty much what you're looking for. If you really want i can type out a simplified, but step-by-step outline of how your computer shows you a website. Then you can search the terms in wikipedia if you want.
