Good to see you thinking ahead and attempting to be prepared for the one the worst things that can happen to us: HDD failure and loss of data

Simplest IMHO: External HDD using the XP backup utility.

I personally have an external i would reccomend just burning what you want to keep ( as someone who absolutely under no cicumstances trusts Symantec).

Whatever method of software you use, the destination will have to be a different physical drive or medium (no offense if that is obvious ).

Are you on a budget? Is there someone that you could borow a HDD from? worst case, you could open the PC, attach a second HDD to the IDE or SATA cable as a "Slave" and transfer your data over.

Also, if you have another PC, you could get a "null-modem" cable and transfer data that way.

If you are going to get a new HDD anyway, then you could do a "File migration."

Or - Are you attempting to make an "exact" duplicate of your HDD's data?

Need clarification? Just post Q's

P.S. I would not pass my data through a third party.

Yes, I believe that they are one-and-the same. As long as it will safely transfer data to a secure location, then I'll even call it "Sally".

Ok so I was wondering what a file migration is? And when I RMA my HDD, will they send me my replacement HDD first and then I could transfer the date or will I have to send my HDD first and then they will send me a new one. The maxtor website wasn't very clear.

Damn! sounds as though you may be SOL on this.

Is there no way you can piece together something that will be able to access and transfer the data?

I'm paranoid, and sending my HDD off into the unkown is like... (online banking, investing, etc...)
