Which filetype are you using? For startup sound it might need to be a .wav file.
How to get a music file to open on startup (Vista).
Title pretty much sums it up. I'm trying to get an mp3 file to play when Vista starts up, preferably without a media player, and if that's not possible, a minimized one (changing the startup sound didn't work). Any ideas?

Well, when I tried using it as startup, I converted to wav, but it's an mp3.
Well if that doesn't work then you can try putting a shortcut in the startup folder for all users (or who ever you want it to play for) and then in the shortcut settings you can tell it to run minimized.
