A friend(yes a friend) whats to know if there is a way to have a working hidden partition without a drive letter? He has two young boys and doesn't want them to see their adult stuff,he has been using a external drive but they have found that and its just a matter of time before they figure out how to view all the stuff. He says the boys are pretty smart so if you cant see it, you cant go looking for it so....could anyone help?

Make a hidden folder than encrypt it requiring a password to view.

I have never hard of a hidden partition although I am sure it is quite possible. I can't figure it out myself, Im lost in how you'd access it.

However I am sure a networking person may know, somebody who has done school networks or something of the kind where partitions may need to remain hidden for security reasons.

Truecrypt just for pr0n? I hope you're kidding

Anyways, if you're running a non-home version of Windows, i.e. Windows XP Pro, Vista or 7 Pro / Ultimate, you can simply use NTFS permissions to deny access to the folders.

1) Make sure the kids have their own user account to log into the computer with.

2) Set permissions on the necessary folders to "Deny" access to the Kids' user accounts.

3) Make sure the kids' user accounts are *not* computer administrators, 'cause that defeats the purpose in any case.

Just tell him to unplug the external and take the cable with him.

Instead of assigning a letter to the partition you can mount it inside an NTFS folder, which ultimately works as you're asking. This can all be done within the disk management utility in windows.
But this is not the best solution compared to encrypted partitions with tools like truecrypt

if you your friend does have a 'Home' OS, then you can do what you want with simple .zip file. Truecrypt is another good suggestion, but a little over the top maybe...

definately encrypt it or have certain drives only allowed by administrators, but my experiences tell me kids will get their porn one way or another so you might as well have them look at this instead of some of the nasty stuff I stumbled across on the internet

You sure the stuff currently on the external HDD isn't "nasty" either?

I've used zip files, hidden files and TrueCrypt.

TrueCrypt is where it's at. Simple and easy and far more secure.
