I’m trying to add a registry to key to our workstations using a GPO. However, I’m getting the following error from workstations where the user isn’t a local administrator.

Any suggestions on how to get around this error?

Local users on AD.

I tried creating a VBS script and initially I inserted it into a test user's logon script. It worked.

But for a user that isn't local admin, they get a scary error message. So I moved the script to the startup script section of the GPO. Now there is no error, but I dont' see the registry key get created, either.

Not sure if it will work for a registry key or not but try to see if this might work. Right click on the .reg file, and "Run As" and I assume you are an admin of sort type in your username/pass and it will execute the script with your permissions.

We always push registry changes through our desktop management tool Desktop Authority (scriptlogic.com) with no problems.
Special "Registry" object makes this a snap.
Just select hive, key or value and operation (add, delete, write). After that with validation logic you can choose which computers will recieve this new changes at logon.
You will be able to modify registry even in the case when user doesn't have administrative rights or special permissions for this - it's very useful function.

Do you have the remote registry service started on the machine you are pushing the registry entry to?
