Someone told me I would be able to drop my temps by using less thermal compound, so i took some off, temps shot up to 70c, I applied what I had left of my shin etsu (not much) and temps are now 57c at max rpm (quite loud)

More thermal compound due next Tue, but until then it looks like Ill be folding on 3 cores to keep my temps down.

How do I make SMP only use 3 cores?

Right click the process in task manager. Then click set affinity and choose the cores you want to use.

It'd be better to just use the -smp 3 flag.

Where you have the -smp flag at the shortcut, add a 3 to the end so it's "-smp 3" (without the quotes)

Only dropped temps 2c, so i decided it wasnt worth it.

57c is OK, the fan burned out on the HSF on my X4 955 and it was 70c for over a week

I think AMD's limit is like 65c, so while 57 is warm, it's perfectly acceptable (and given the PPD drop going to 3 cores, I'd just stay with 4)

Its 62 for c2s, but I know its safe. Its just stressful

Well, if you can deal with it through Friday I'd say all 4 cores, but maybe drop it down after that?

Some clarification.

The "-smp 3" flag will force the computer to use 3 cores. However, because of Windows 7's load balancing feature, it will spread the usage over the whole CPU, so each core will actually be at 75% usage, not 3 cores at 100% and one at 0%.

So, you will also need to use the Task Manager affinity method to lock the client to 3 cores, giving 100% usage on only 3 cores.
