How to retain window XP without reinstalling when upgrade motherboard ? ?

Sorry , having a newb question, I plan to upgrade my motherboard but I wanted back the current Window XP. A fresh install needed a lot of time since I had a lot of programs and settings needed to backup and configure them.
I found some through googling but still I wasn't certain it will work.

Anyone did it upgrading motherboard without reinstalling window XP ?

Thank you very much

One way that I've done this in the past is to pop the motherboard CD in, for the new motherboard, BEFORE you change the hardware out. Install all the drivers for the new mobo first. Then shutdown and change out the mobo. If you're lucky it'll come up with the new drivers and start yelling about how Windows isn't genuine anymore

If you're unlucky it just won't come up and you'll have to reinstall.

OS is on your HDD not your Motherboard.

I went from ECS to ASUS no problem, but i had vista...
Really hope to have someone verify and tested ways to switch motherboard without reinstalling window xp .
It's not as difficult as you would think, but it's best to reformat. You can run DriverSweeper and uninstall all graphics and sound drivers. Disconnect your internet connection and uninstall every single driver that your motherboard has via Device Manager. You're probably going to have some conflicts when you add the new board. This is what I did one time. I've learned, however, to reformat for every mobo change.
It's best to reinstall however I have done this before. I first uninstalled all supporting drivers dealing with the motherboard in device manager. Then I powered down and switched everything, windows booted up ok and installed new drivers rather well.

do this man its not always 100% going to work tho sometimes you cant get away with it but here

1. remove drivers on os reboot but not back into windows - use a driver cleaner 2 make sure you get it all --- shutdown install MOTHERBOARD

2. boot to your xp disk

3. press R at the second screen not the first

4. windows will run the repair installation follow it through

5. if all goes well your in windows and you didn't get that nasty bsod

its also a good idea to remove any components that are not required to run the computer while you do the repair - doing this can prevent bsod if you are getting it.

but yeah that's the best method that you can try if that wont work nothing will good luck

If you keep the same chipset, it also works.
If you use Sysprep you only have to worry about the storage drivers.

Uninstall all your drivers first. That might work. This copy of Windows 7 has seen 3 mobos, 1 had an AMD/ATI chipset and the other two have nvidia chipsets.

Dunno if XP would be the same or not but it's always worth a shot

I did a search and it said is't like norton ghost cloning.Isn't it a bit too large to clone 20GB of files/programs ?

Any guide showing which specific driver or a must driver to uninstall and remove?
