At work we have 1200 DVDs/CDs that need to be archived. The basic solution is to buy some device that has like 10 optical drives and just copy paste. I thought about getting some raspbery pi's and usb optical drives and have some script copy the files over, and once its done to turn off... but is that really helping... is that cheaper? I could make a tower with X optical drives myself.... but then i gotta build it, while we could just spend 1-2k more for some fancy device.

The other thing is that the DVDs have a label on the disk itself. We also have metadata in a spreadsheet with that info. It would be cool if that list and the massive stack of disks were in order, but they are not.

So yeah... it's an interesting problem, and probably the simple answer is the best answer, but I think it would be interesting to hear some other ideas.

Get a DVD autoloader. Most emphasize disc duplication, but they can usually be setup just to read/rip discs as well.
