I got a cheap HP (P4 2.4Ghz, dead mobo, dead PSU, no HDD), but in the original HP case. With the Windows HP CD-Key on it. They guy was the one who brought up selling the key on ebay (After he gave it to me) since he said he installed Linux on it the day he got it, up until the PSU gave out and took stuff with it.

So:

#1:
Do Dell, HP, Compaq, etc keys work like normal keys?

#2
Legal to sell on ebay?

If the key is a sticker on a computer, it is an OEM key. They are not transferable.

no its not legal to sell the key, and yes they do mostly although it isn't really legal cause its a OEM key.

I mean really thats like someone selling you a game. then telling you just bought the cd's the key wasn't included and then selling the key. You can't do that.

How is it like that?

People sell (legit) game CD Keys over eBay and such all the time.

No I know that, But I mean if someone sold you a game, complete with the discs. Then they tell you the CD key to play the game isn't included with it, and they sell it seperately.

You bought the HP PC, that cd key is linked to that machine and its hardware, it can't be transfered around or anything

Not transferable to non-HP/Compaq/etc computers, or non-transferable period?

I have an NCS built computer that I've modded and all..I'm pretty sure I've been able to re-install using that same key on a different machine before. But, I could be wrong, I think I have like 3 key's...gotta love the one's that you can use unlimited amount of times!! =)
