HTPC build, Recommend your favorite stuff

I'm building this out of some of my spare stuff and a few new things. I've never had a really good HTPC setup so I'd just like to see what people who have been doing this a while enjoy as good software and hardware.

Intel E6600 2.4Ghz
Gigabyte GA-965p-DS3 rev2
Gigabyte Fanless ATI HD4550
Older Antec quiet case NSK 3200 I want to say. Mid Tower.
Windows XP 32bit
4GB DDR2 800 Patriot 5-5-5-12
Corsair HX620
Yateloon Flat Blade Mediums in both case locations
Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro
WD Green 1TB
Seagate 400GB
Seagate 80GB (OS)
OEM Sony SATA DVD reader
Rosewill PCI 802.11G wireless card
Asus v2.0 Bluetooth adapter
Dell bluetooth premuim keyboard
Logitec RF wireless mouse (need to get a BT mouse)

I'll be running HDMI Video and Audio up to 7.1LPCM (must be LPCM my receiver doesn't like bitstream) and most my media will be played in digital format with various players.

At some point I'd very much like to add bluray functionality. This is purely for media and maybe some low end gaming like Sam & Max or various tower defense games.

So what software should I equip my HTPC with? Am I missing anything from my loadout? All the media will be local so the wireless is purely for web/hulu/etc access. Running into a 7.1 LPCM capable receiver and 1080p LCD.

One of the things I'd really like to be able to do is up convert any source being played to either a matrixed 7.1LPCM Regardless of source format for the ATI card to run it to the Receiver. If I could find one rider program to just convert what it hears and send it to the vid/sound card output I would be very pleased.

Can anyone suggest something to get me there?

I'd like to add I have everything but the power supply so this isn't assembled and I'm just pondering here while I wait for the HX750 for my gaming PC so I can Hand-me-down the HX620 to this build. It's possible the 4550 already can do this and I just don't know it.

Sell board and video card and get a G45 shipset with onboard HDMI. BTW, I don't think you can get 7.1 to a receiver via a computer. My 4890 only does 5.1 via HDMI and optical is limited to 5.1 across the board.

I think you're mistaken. The Radeon 4 series does 7.1 through HDMI.

Yes you can get 7.1 Audio through the 4550 if it's output via LPCM

You're likely talking about bitstream which there isn't currently an available Video card that can bitstream the 7.1 codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HDMA). That's ok though my Reciever needs LPCM 7.1 and can't decode those bitstreams anyway.

ATI HD 5000 series support Bitstreaming, but you are still limited to Total Media Theater and Power DVD for the Protected Audio Path Requirements.
