can this HTPC setup play HD movies in 1080p with no stuttering?
I will not overclock this because it will be on for most of the time to play movies and tv.

processor: AMD athlonX2 5200+ 2.7 ghz
ram: 1GB ddr2 667
gpu: Geforce 8800GT / 9800GT 512mb

I would add a GB of RAM and substitute the 8800GT for something like a 8600GT/9400GT/9600GT, you don't need a 8800GT to play movies in HD. And even with your config I doubt that there would be any stuttering, but the 8800GT is overkill and 1GB of RAM is just not enough. Save yourself $60 by going with one cheaper GPU and buy an extra stick of RAM.
Cheaper GPU, more RAM. Integrated graphics can run 1080P nowadays.
I'm running your processor and a ati 3450 and I'm fine. There is some tweaking that I have to do because my cpu usage is 80% and up.

You need to use codecs that will do hardware offloading to the GPU. The 5200 is perfectly capable of 1080i and p playback with a properly set up gpu.

my old htpc was a Sempron 2.5 ghz, 2GB ram, 9800GT, and it stutters a lot when playing 1080p.
It could only handle 720p so it will be just a downloader pc now.

I installed Nvidia purevideo but I guess it doesnt work on VLC or Windows media player.

Was it an AM2 Sempron? It should be fine aslong as you have the right software to use the full potential of the 9800GT. I did a comparison a while back with a 5200+ and a Sempron 3400+ (1.8GHz), aslong as you have a GPU to offload the processing, both CPUs should be completely fine.

Your build is very suitable for an HTPC, add another GB of RAM and you can go with a cheap Nvidia 9400GT to do the video offloading.

VLC is pretty inefficient for HD playback from my experiences. Media Player Classic Home Cinema with CoreAVC (has CUDA offloading) or Divx h264 decoders did wonders for CPU load on my ancient rig.

I tried that player already, doesnt work for me. HD still uses 70 to 100% CPU

The 8800GT could have issues. I tried one with a dual core and cpu usage was around 50-65% and I did have video stuttering at 1080p. Switched to a 4850 and no issues.

ATI is better for HD play back. Its a proven fact.

Get a 3450 or 4350 and your blu ray needs will be met.
