They have those CableCards now that do the digital cable without a cable box. I don't see the point of them for TVs so much, but I would expect there to be a PC peripheral one of these days that will accept CableCards. When that happens, you should be able to get better digital DVR on a PC.

For now though, I would just get a Tivo or a DVR from your cable company.
