Hughes Net is Garbage!!

So, as some of you have(or more likely not) noticed I haven't been active lately this is because I moved recently, and to put it plainly I moved to BFE.

As some of you might know it's pretty hard finding decent internet out of town and what makes it harder is having no credit.

Anyway, when I was going through the list of ISPs the first one I eliminated was Hughes(because I've head nothing good about them), so I end up with a company called wavelength which is expensive for the speeds provided but I go ahead with it anyway.

When the installer showed up he was holding a Hughes modem and as it turns out wavelength is a Hughes subsidiary(?) I thought "oh well they can't be that bad" WRONG.

They have a download limit of 200MB a day.
The latency is anywhere from 600ms to well over a second.
Its $70 a month for 1mbps.
They made the installer be the bearer of bad news for most of this which is just rude.
If I go over the 200MB it's limited to dial up speeds for 48 hours which I already did updating TF2.
All of my online games are absolutely useless with the huge latency.
The modem is giant and the satellite is twice the size of my dish network satellite.

The only good thing I can say is that the contract goes into effect 30 days from now and I can cancel between then and now and I get the deposit back but not the first months bill.

Anyone got any suggestions? REP+ for help.

P.S. Before anyone says it I'm technically a minor so I can't put it in my name.

suggestions? cancel it and stick with dial up! lol but seriously..if you live far out of town then Satellite internet is your only option.and it's slow...and expensive..i used to have hughes net. but actually hughsnet didn't have a daily cap so you might wanna go with the parent company and not the sub company? also..the only other option i can think of is getting wireless service through your wireless cell provider. if you're able to get wireless service in your home area than wireless internet should be available through a little usb thumb drive type adapter/modem.

I'm afraid I can't help you, but you have my deepest sympathy. I used to have Virgin Media, so I know what you are going through
Hope you find a solution

Is that wavelength satellite? For the most part, satellite is bad for any sort of gaming. Those caps are outrageous, though! I would suggest, if you can find it, trying to see if there are any DSL connections that branch out to where you are. Maybe cable? Not sure how far out you are..
No wireless providers out there?

I know where I live I'm in the same bout but one of the cable companies offers Wireless which is not advertised so the only way to know is to call and ask. So I guess what I am saying is try calling local cable companies and see what they can offer.

Other then that, go dial up because Hughes is a joke, Satellite period is a joke unless it's dedicated from my experience.

I'm guessing you don't get any cell service out your way either?
i just checked and ALLTEL(soon to be verizon) has wireless internet service in your area so call them up for more info. plans start at 59.99/month with unlimited usage

Typically NOT with unlimited bandwidth. No daily limit, though; more like 5GB/month or so. Try it, you might find it to work well as long as you have good data coverage, but don't trust it to play nice with games.

Are they the only ISP you have acces to? If not try another, this time read the fine print.

What is dedicated satellite?

No, but all the others i tried seemed bad at the time now they're looking OK. And there was no fine print, did it over the phone and asked them specifically if there will be any limits and they said no.

Satellite is always going to suck for latency, due to the fact that the signal has to go up to space and then come back down. The only real solution for internet out in the boonies is something that is RF based. I have internet like that out where I live, I get about 60ms avg ping. If all you have is satellite internet where you live you can forget about gaming, unless all you play is turn based stuff. Try to see if there is wimax or another type of rf based isp.

Ya, cell phone internet would be the way to go if you can get it.

Can you link me to your ISPs web site?
