When I got the revised P67 board and was putting everything back together, I came across two different fan splitters in my box of cables and stuff. One of them looked like this, with three wires going to both fan connectors:

The other one had one three wires going to one fan connector, but only two going to the other, like this:

I used the first one to connect both my CPU fans to the mobo because it was longer. Now, looking at HWmonitor, my "CPUFANIN" RPM is all over the place, from 0 to 255, changing very rapidly (in blue). I looked in the case and the fans are definitely not changing RPM like that.

So I wondered whether it has anything to do with the fan splitter I used? What is the third wire that is present for one fan connector, but absent for the other?

Also, does anyone know what the temperatures highlighted in red are? Only "SYSTIN" seems to be fluctuating at all, and only slightly. Is that the Northbridge? The other two aren't changing at all, why is that?

You can only monitor the RPM of one fan at a time. The cable with 2 sets of 3 pin lines has a problem. As for all those things going on in HWmonitor, I don't know. Could be the bad cable, does it do that if you use the 3+2 pin one?

^^ this. remove or cut one of the yellow wires from the 3/3 pin y-cable or swap it with the 3/2 pin cable and check again.

Its OK to just cut it? Is that any worse than just replacing it with the other one? If there's no disadvantage to just cutting it I will because its longer and more convenient

Yes, it's ok to remove it or replace it with other adapter ... whatever works best for your setup.

Ok, thanks. And what about if I were to connect it to a fan controller? Does the fan controller use the information from that black wire at all?

Also, last time I was in BIOS it looked like the RPM value for CPU_FAN was different from what HWMonitor was reporting. I'll reboot in a minute and check on that.

Black wire? I think you mean yellow, and it reports fan speed and if your fan controller supports it, yes you need one yellow wire.

Trust what the BIOS is reporting, period.
