So right now I have two pcs my sig rig and an i3 rig that I use as a back up server and messing around with Linux distros and uh another OS. Currently that one is using gtx 460 which is kind of overkill since I don't do anything other than 2d.

What I would like to do is move the gtx469 to my sig rig and get a cheap card for the i3 machine. My goal would be to connect the 6870s to dvi as the main card and connect the gtx 460 to hdmi. Under windows the 460 would be a physx card under Linux it would be the main card. That way I would have the benefit of physx in games and avoid the bad ati drivers for Linux which would allow me to dual boot on my sig rig.

I know i can setup the nvidia card in Linux but not if I can get it all working in windows. Anyone ever done anything like this?

I read the physx with ati thread but it seems to involve using two screens not using a separate input on the same monitor.

with windows 7 (and perhaps with other versions as well), you can do AMD + nVIDIA for phsyx using one monitor. If you give a search for phsyx and windows 7 in the ATI forum, you will find the exact instructions.

Yeah I saw thread butnit involved attaching resistors to a via cablemto make it think it's plugged into an active monitor. I was wondering if using a secondary port would accomplish the same thing since I wanted to use the nvidia card for Linux. Google searching turned up mixed answers.

I am not sure about using it for Linux. But just from a windows 7 view point, I do not think you need to do all that. I do not remember doing anything like that when I was using one 6950 + one 9800 GTX+ for physx. I was able to apply the 9800 GTX+ to a non-existent monitor via nVIDIA control panel.

Of course, I do not know what more complexity it throws in the kind of dual OS setup you are doing..

Ok I tried it followed the guide and it was a complete disaster.

The first time I booted with the nvidia card one of my 6870's disappeared from my temp sensors not a good sign catalyst kept reporting that I was using card 2 not number one. I actually got physx working but it would blue screen within minutes with an ati driver error. Took nvidia card out and all is normal again.

Even if I disable the nvidia card it in windows it still screwed up the crossfire.
