I leave for a weekend, and it all blows up...

Ok, I haz a bit of a confuzzled.

So I go away for the weekend and turn off my computer to save energy (I NEVER turn it off, except to update Windows). Come back, hit the power button and it starts booting, but never gets to a POST screen. The POST code on the mobo is 88, which means 1) BIOS data is effed up 2) the NB chipset is defective.

What the hell?

Ok, fine, so something happened. I learn the power went out a few times over the weekend, but my machine is plugged into a surge protector and none of the other electronics in the house (which aren't surge protected) were affected.

So I'm kinda pissy and I get some food, come back to work on it, and I hit the power button again. It does the same thing, but without the LED POST code. Great.

I move a fan that I ghetto placed to clear the CMOS and try powering it on again in hopes it managed to fix itself (yea, right), and now it wont even attempt to boot. Nothing was changed/moved other than the fan.

I got no clue as to what's wrong with it. No one's (supposedly) touched it over the weekend, there's no leak in my loop (though, it is kinda dirty...), and it's hooked up to a surge protector.

What the eff...

Halp?

Could something have fallen inside your case while away and is causing some kind of short somewhere?
A bug got stuck in one of the vacume tubes and shorted it, just change the tube.

Oh... nevermind.

Not remotely possible...the case has three fan holes for my radiator, but the radiator would have blocked anything large enough that was able to fall though, from falling any further.

Good idea though.

I am thinking a power surge...
I shut mine off when ever I'm not on it but I know if mine is left off to long some times I have to reset the bios and redo the settings-raid and what not.

Hope you figure it out.
Try clearing your CMOS then see what happens.
Power surge. I've had the same thing happen to me and kill a board. Despite having a surge protector your board was most likely killed.
Okay, so when your press the power button nothing happens? If this is the case try another PSU if you have one on hand. If not, unplug your mobo, leave everything else plugged in, and trick the PSU into running just to see if it will give any juice at all. If it doesn't you found the problem, if it does, you have narrowed down the problem.

Yep, it was attempting to boot when I first started (fans spinning up, video card lights turning on, but it never made it to the POST screen...it'd just chill there.

Now it just...kinda....doesn't do anything.

Clear the CMOS overnight maybe?

Give the bios reset a shot, its pretty much all you can try ATM.

Have you tried shorting the CMOS battery socket?

Reseat all cords and plugs?

If its doing nothing at all then its likely 2 possibilitys here. The PSU is shot, thus not giving power. Or the MOBO is shot and not turning the PSU on. Refer to my last post to check.

A large % of computer parts are going to die due to expanding and warping during heating up and cooling down.

You left your computer on for a long time, the board got use to being that hot, and when you turned it off, it cooled down. The board probably warped enough during the cooling down process causing it to break.

I'm not saying what you did was bad, but rather bad luck. Soon or later most hardware is going to break from it.
Awesome. Just what I needed to start off the holiday season.

It's just weird, because it turned on (the PSU at least) fine when I first tried and not half an hour later it just stops responding at all.

Bleh. Resetting the CMOS is my only choice I guess. If that doesn't work, I'll take it over to my friends and have a fun day of playing "replace the part" to see what still works...

Have you checked your RAM?

Yea, I had a bad stick of RAM before, but the last one has worked flawlessly for the past 4 months.

I'm gonna do what the guy in that thread did and just do a CMOS reset. If it doesn't work...well...time to downgrade.
