I need a good backup storage device

I need to reformat my pc, and I need to back up about 60 gigs of files before doing so. What would be the best thing for me to do? My budget is $60. Would it be cheaper to buy an external HD or build my own with internal hd and an enclosure?

Grab a free partition manager and create a new partition on one of your existing hard drives. Put the data you want to backup on the partition. Reinstall Windows and then just move all your data back onto your original partition and delete the one you created (or just leave it on there, doesn't matter).
External HDDs aren't that expensive... But one for your price range, you're better off getting...

Or you could try to build your own enclosure and get a better HDD.

What if the HDD fails?

It would be cheaper to get a drive + enclosure.

Or you can wait till black friday for some uber cheap deals on eHDDs.

But that's a long wait

Uhhhh... he never said anything about preventing long-term data loss. He just wanted to keep some data safe while he's reinstalling Windows, at least, that what I took his problem to be.
And having an external HD wouldn't help with that problem either, because what if the external HD failed? Same problem. The only way to prevent data loss is a mirrored RAID array.

??
Ok... Umm...
If you have two HDDs, and both have the same data on it, if one fails you can use the other.
If you have one HDD with two partitions of the same data on it, if the one HDD fails you lose everything...

Maybe I'm missing something...

i vote for using a free partition tool, like parted magic, to create a new partition on your current drive for your data. this option is free! minus the cost of the cd-r

I was thinking all he wanted to do was backup the 60GB of data until Windows is reinstalled, so going out and buying another HDD just to use it for an hour or two wouldn't really be worth it..
