I need a good digital cheap camera

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a good yet cheap digital camera. I don't know too much about cameras or the market for them. I would prefer to get a used one, but before I make my decision, I need to know what to look for.

What are the important things to know when shopping for a camera? What is considered good megapixels? I'd like for the camera to be at least 1920 x1080 if possible. Sorry if these seem like noob questions, just getting into the market here. Thanks guys

I should also mention that the ability to record in 1080p would be a huge plus.

Well, in the $300 range:

I was thinking of something less than $100. Sorry I should have specified. If not able to record 1920x1080, then 1280x720 would be fine

If you want to record in 1080P, you won't be buying a "cheap" still camera. Something like a Sony HX1 might be the cheapest you will find and that is about $400 used.

What's your budget?

Are you focusing more on getting a camera or camcorder?

Do you care about the size?

My budget is about ~ $100.

I would like to have the convenience of having a camera and camcorder in one.

The more compact the better. I'm not looking for something professional or high end. I just need a digital camera/camcorder because I currently do not own one.

What do I need it for? To take pictures for craigslist, take pictures for here at OCN, take pictures with people, record videos of myself for youtube's new 1080p feature, record videos of whatever, etc etc etc.

I do NOT need it for making movies or any kind of professional work

So anyways, back to my original question... how is that one from office depot?

It's probably very mediocre.

Yes but that is what I am searching for... my eyes cannot tell the difference between a mediocre shot or a professional shot. I can't afford to spend >$100 unfortunately. I have never owned a digital camera/camcorder, so as long as it works I will be happy.

Think of it like this, I am a first time computer buyer, and I just picked up a mediocre machine from costco, as long as it works im happy. I am completely ignorant of the high end core i7s and radeon 5xxxx, but I dont NEED it. Thats the boat I am in with the camera/camcorder situation.

If you want 1080p videos from a still camera, that will mean a newer camera which, with that capability, won't be $100. More like 3 to 4 times that cost. A still camera that can shoot 1080p is expensive. For $100, it will likely have VGA quality video (640x480) if at all.

Now if you want just a camcorder that can record video in 1080p, that's doable for $100-$200, but you really have to understand that camcorders make pitiful still cameras.

I'm not familiar with Ativa, and from a quick search can't find any reviews, but I get the feeling it's a low-end brand. You get what you pay for.
