I need a HTPC, I'm sure you've all seen this before.

Right, so, I just set up a network in my house and discovered the joy of sharing and streaming files.

I want to make a HTPC with very simple requirements:

-Can play 1080P movies back WITH ABSOLUTELY NO ISSUES
-HDMI-out

Bonuses:
-MicroATX
-STABLE!

It would be nice to be able to expand later on and put a blu-ray drive in (later on, again) and have more room for harddrives.

So, yeah, I assume this is fairly simple and that it's been done a million times, but I really only know of gaming PCs, so if somebody has that build thats been posted a million times that works for everybody like this, I'd love to see it.

Do you have a budget in mind?
Great Idea for HTPC, most with oncase screens come with a program to work in with your pc and the media centre side of things, Very Simple and cheap to make a machine for DVD 1080p movies.... should be ok
Here's my dream HTPC.

Best HTPC solution right now is a 790GX based system. I'd go for a Phenom II x3, 790GX (gigabyte or foxconn), some decent DDR2, and a bluray player in a small case. The 790GX motherboard has HDMI out on the onboard GPU.
Here is a start. I just threw it together really quick. Would run 1080p easily and no need for extra card. Any hdd and blueray drives would work good. Not much different from a gaming machine.

Meh. Not looking to go overboard, just something that won't give me trouble.

Will I be able to get what I want with a MicroATX board? Full ATX is a bit bigger and I kind of want this to be quiet and out of the way.

Edit: Nevermind about MicroATX. I can't find a case I would want to use with one either way.

I'm pretty inexperienced with how much power is needed to play 1080P without issues, and how much/if NVIDIA/ATI GPUs help with that.

I was looking at this case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119068

and I was thinking that ATI was the better choice for these types of systems because (and I've only heard) that the HDMI ports on the cards put out full 7.1 sound without any crazy workarounds.

I would probably spend a little more money and get this power supply too:

Modular and made by Antec, keep my wiring nice in it. Very nice PSU too.

780g motherboard for 50-80 bucks plus a single core low powered sempron with 1gb of ram will play 1080p perfectly smooth with ~15%-30% cpu utilization. The key is to use programs that offloads the work to the gpu. I've done it and if that's what you want out of your htpc then use that as a starting reference. Feel free to pm me if you have more questions.
I'm looking to keep this simple enough. Throw it together like a normal PC, put it on my network, install my anti-virus and codecs (which I would like to know what people are using for there HTPC, as I use CCCP on my PC) and then just play videos and not have to worry about it.

Oh, and OS, Vista or XP? I have copies of both laying around.
Here is a HD4650 with HDMI port:

Will suit a HTPC nicely.

Looks good.

Wanting some more input on the card though, with it having no reviews and me not having ever heard of that company. o.o

But I'd trust that card enough for a light gaming machine, I'm sure it'll be fine for the purposes of this machine. Hell, maybe he'll end up playing a game or two on it as well.

I know this is a stupid question but: People just take an HDMI cable from that, the card, to their TV, and play the videos as if it were their monitor, right? And it gives them sound from the system hooked up to their TV?

Ati cards have an integrated HDMI audio chip onboard.

And if you don't trust that brand, you can try looking for another one with a HDMI port. This one just seemed like a great deal. Remember, all GPU's on those things come from one company.

Ive been contemplating an HTPC to sort of act as a print server/ file server/ gaming pc on my screen, kind of a universal...

Ive come up with

780g mATX board of whichever flavor you choose (HD3200 onboard) w/ HDMI out
a 4850e or 5050e low power dual core cpu around 2.5ghz or so
and 2x2gb of ddr2 ( most say 2x1 but im sort of stressing the gaming part)

Add in HDDs, a copy of vista and possibly a blu ray drive and if youre up for it a tuner and youre good to go.

The above rig will run 1080p flawless as many people have stated so.

I don't think the hd3200 will be up for maxxed WoW at 1080p, let alone crysis or farcry 2 or anything, so a gpu might be a future upgrade for me.

Im also contemplating this PHENOM 9600 COMBO ON NEWEGG since im looking for more power, but this defeats my low power consumption idea...

The only thing ive been unable to get a clear answer on is the HDMI Audio on the 780g chipsets, its seems as though it doesnt deliver dolby digital or even 5.1, but generally they have a digital out on the boards that does... so go figure...

I'm probably going to go with a dedicated card to bypass any issues I might run into.

I'd like to find a nice, stable motherboard that will take a PhII x3 710/720. That way I know the machine will be able to handle absolutely anything that gets thrown at it, from decoding, to playback, to gaming.

So, a motherboard that will take a PhII x3 710/720, anybody know of one? (I can probably update the BIOS if I can do it from a flash drive)
Shuttle XPC is worth looking into.
