Ok its time to upgrade I have a few things in mind.

Sli'ing my 7600GT
Buying a used 7800GT
Used 7900GT
7950gt
8600GTS

which is the best?

Out of those I pick either the 7950GT or the 7900GT. The 8600 from what I've heard is rather lackluster. And those two are the best. As for ATi. a 2900XT is the only I'd get from them, but thats kinda expensive.

personally i have a 8600gts and love it imo you can't go wrong with thi card

If you gotta buy now Id go 7950GT, itll get you about the same DX9 performance as the 8600GTS (actually a little better i think)

Yeah, but when you jump up to DX10. I don;t think the numbers are near that good.

8600GTS is good because you can play DX10 and DX9 games, but not at rich high resolutions and details.
ATI cards, have a look in X1950Pro, but if you want a Vista killer graphics card get X2900XT but quite pricey.
Nvidia is fine for XP and don't game on Vista then you'll be fine.

go for the 7950, it will beat any DX10 card except the 8800 series. Here you go, you can compare the charts to look at the performance of the 7950, they don't list the 8600's, so here is a review with them:

I cut the the middle of the review because 3Dmark really doesn't matter too much with the newer video cards. The 8600GTS's appear to beat the 7950 in every 3DMark benchmark, however they never beat the 7950 in any of the games tested. You might be able to if you overclocked, but overclocking is a gamble, you might get a card that doesn't overclock a single mhz, you might not. Up to you.

Also, Dx10 requires massive power, the 8600's really can muster that kind of power at any reasonable resolution or AA/AF level.

X1950 series card from ATI are really good for DX9 games, if you want a DX10 card X2900XT or 8800 series is a better for futureproof games, i.e. StarCraft II, Call of Juraz, Crysis, etc.

7950 ftw. no dx10 games out yet so 8600 is pointless, unless for hi-def.
