Well, to be honest, I always have been. I'm currently running AVG internet security 8.5 but the license has expired, and i can't afford a license atm so, I need your advice to get the best free protection software out there... and i really mean it.. THE BEST!!!

Yes, i'm very paranoid, but there's a good reason: I have a second PC which works as a remote data backup server for my dad's business, so I must make sure the server and my PC are well protected

So if you could give me an advice on the best free antivirus, firewall, antispyware and other protection software out there, i'd thank you... A LOT

Also, if you could give me another advise for my next protection suite it would be great (i'll buy a new one in 2 months

In 2 months I would look into getting NOD32. It's a great program.
Here is what I run and it works great. It pretty much catches everything.

BitDefender Free Edition
Malwarebytes AntiMalware
A-Sqaured
SuperAntiSpyware
ZoneAlarm firewall free edition
AntiVir AntiVirus
I am thinking of installing a couple more for good measure:

Spybot search and destroy
AVG Free

Edit: I know this is overkill but my system cost me a lot (808 + 485 for repairing in PSU went and took my mobo, proc, GPU, and itself). I also have a lot of backup data on here (that my friends paid me 50 for) and I will not risk it. >.>

I have all these scan weekly and when i backup a friends data, it gets scanned by everything, then my system gets scanned. It will go all night but it is worth it. No viruses for me
And by the way, there is not such thing as the "Best" antivirus out there. You have to use a combination.

second avast especially if you have xp or 32 vista i cant remember so you can use the boot time scan
I use NOD32 and it has served me well. I used to use spybot and AVG, but I tried this and felt it was much safer. I haven't had any problems what so ever since using it. Zone alarm is decent as well.

wouldn't that combination use a lot of processing power from my PC?

Go with a combination of AVG Free and Spybot Search & Destroy which I use and love, or get NOD32.
Using NOD32 and this AV is kickbutt. Using it's block http advanced feature for a blacklist of ad/ware sites, and can now browse mostly unmolested. Dropped AVG as it made system boots painfully long. With NOD32 now can boot in about 3 blinks on even this Little Rig (can't wait to see how it performs on the new Little Rig).

Coded in assembly language (direct language of the processor) is the key to why it's so fast.

ADDED: Also use PCTools Spydoctor 6 and Registry Mechanic (and with NOD32, all three work together without a hiccup). Won't use Spybot ever again due to it's v-e-r-y high false positive ratios. It was good back in 2006, but today it's pretty long in the tooth, and can be dangerous with what it flags as some registry remnant.

i agree with the malware bytes its come in handy a few times , idk the other one .why dont you just use the avg free? your used to using it , itll just be stripped down i guess from what your used to. I use avg free., so i guess i wouldnt know the difference. I have heard nothing but great things about avast , maybe try that

I've used avast in the past but I didn't feel safe enough...

What if I use a combination of ZoneAlarm Firewall and Avira or AVG free edition? As well as Spybot search and destroy?
Another one for Avira AntiVir.

Good program. I read some test summary recently and Avira beat all the AV software that was tested, including paid apps, and including unknown infections.

Downside is it also had a very high rate of false positives in the test.

i use kasparsky. been awsome, real time mem and cpu waching, use's more resources but i have had great luck with some of the horrid suff i download, it catchs them before they even get to install or even breath...
Well, i have decided that i'm going to use AVG free edition as the antivirus, a-squared for antispyware and anti rootkit and ZoneAlarm firewall...

does this looks solid and safe? what's your opinion?

Seconded. If you want a suite they have that now too. I'm still running just the AV, but I love it.

I have no problem with free Anti-Virus. They work just as well. I sometimes think I'm overprotected with Avast! (live scan! blocks OCN chat though) and Comodo Firewall Pro (crazy firewall too advance, zone alarm might be better in the long run). AVG is a good one too. Either Avast! or AVG + Comodo or Zone Alarm Firewall = your greatest suite. If you want to get more adaware or spybots or something like that. But I've been running this on all computers and they are good and light.
hey man if i was you id just bite the bullet and buy AVG. When it comes to protecting your valuables and information would u rather keep em in a safe with a broken hinge or buy a new safe.
