RAID 0 arrays.

Firstly, 3 drives is the most I'll see a performance gain with (i.e. over 2) given on-board RAID chips tend to only handly 3-4 drives well, right?

also, there's no way of adding another disk to a RAID array without "losing" all the data contained therein. Is that right too?

I'm pretty sure I'm right on both counts. Neither of which I'm happy about

You can take an image of a 2 disk raid0 and restore it to the new 3 disk.

Curses.

+rep for taking time to reply.

Pity, I would've liked to just add the disk. I can see why one can't remove an active disk from an array, but adding one? sheesh.

fresh install here we come!!

Decent standalone cards can usually do what you wanted, but remember the onboard controllers are really little more than individual SATA channels bolted together with the firmware tweaked. You can't really expect advanced featuresets...

Just make sure if you do get a standalone car you either make the drive image or reformat because your RAID array will only be recognized by the controller it was created on. You don't want to end up like another member who no longer has the board he made an array on and now can't get his GF's pictures off for the mean time!

I could think of a whole number of reasons why he hasn't added...

Planning! It's all in the planning!
.

I hope you have a good backup / storage disk and you're not putting everything on the RAID-0 array...

Atually, I'm putting everything on the RAID 0.

Apart from photos, which are on Skydrive and the laptop.

Re-installing everything only takes a day or so and frankly it's not that much hassle if one of the RAID 0 drives fails.

Intel RAID controllers let you add additional drives without rebuilding the array. Look it up on the Intel site for their Matrix Controller Manager software. Of course, you'd need to load the S/W first..
