I think I got a dead one

Well I'm making a new build for my brother, nothing major just a smaller m-atx e5200 machine. 1 optical, 1 hdd, 4gb ramand a 4670 all being carried by a corsair 400w. Nothing huge, I know, but this is FAR from a high powered machine.

Well I got it mostly built, not expansion cards or anything special, not even an hdd at this point. But I plugged it in after the PSU was hooked up just to make sure things were running along fine. So, I pressed the power button and....

Nothing.

Now I've build alot of systems, and I can say that I've had pretty good luck at pushing the power button and at least a post or something. I dont even get that.

No fans, no psu fans, no cpu fans, no beeps, no nadda. Yes, I flipped the switch in the back of the PSU.

I am getting a small LED on the motherboard blinking gently at me. Little green light, blink blink.... blink blink.... but no noise. And it goes away after i cut the power to the machine. If it was an unseated CPU (stupid push pins) I would get a freaking beep or something.

So, before I ninja toss (rma) my first Corsair PSU.... COULD it be anything else?

Make sure all your PSU cords are plugged in correctly?

Make sure the mobo isn't grounded?
Right now there are only two things plugged in, the motherboard power, and the 4pin cpu power. Those weren't giving me any love, so i plugged in the two case fans for the antec p180mini. Nothing there either.

And yeah, my motherboard is on risers, so i am inclinded to think its not grounding out. i could pull the thing and try again though.
Reseat the CPU, ram and recheck the power button connection on the motherboard. Have you used the case before?, I have had one power button not work which caused all kind of frustration.

Well,if the fans wont power up off the PSU,I'd be inclined to say that the PSU is the problem. However, the grouding still could be an issue so taking it out at bench testing it would rule that out as a problem

Maybe your PSU wants more things to power? I can't imagine that is it though.

Hrmm.. you could always try to jump your PSU. Do a search on OCN on doing it. I think it doesn't take very long, and it will give you a pretty definitive answer.

I had been thinking it COULD be the case, but never really gave it a second look. I have been unboxing the thing and playing with it most the night, so I am pretty much done tearing it down for today. I will give it another crack in the morning.

But yeah, an entire reseat is due. But if it was a seating issue, I would be getting some kind of power up first. .... right?

Yeah, if reseat doesnt work, its going up the bench next. Then go from there.

Thanks for the link going to give it a fire before i go to bed, see if that at least gets some kind of response from the PSU. +rep for the linkage.

Make sure you let us know if it fires up before you head to bed.

And don't electrocute yourself.

well thats going to be a joy, because PSU's are so light and easy to ship.

So, again just to make sure, no chance it could be anything other than the .

1) PSU
2) power button on the case.

And with the paperclip test we kinda rule out #2 dont we?
Well, did you make sure you had the paper clip in the right wires?

I believe it is green and black. You need to put the paper clip into the green first I think.

Also, make sure the PSU switch is flipped on. I think that post says to have the PSU flipped on before plugging into the wall.

FYI, for RMA'ing a psu, you might not want to mention that you tried jumping it with a paper clip. I'm not sure if they would appreciate that.

The paper clip rules out both of problems there,IIRC the paper clip allows you to jump the PSU without having anything connected to it

Last question then im off to bed,

When i toss an different psu i got laying around into it that i must procure from the attic...

IF it does the same thing. What would be my next order of business? The switch on the case?

If you get no power at all, then yes.

If you get activity (fans spinning up etc) then I would look at your motherboard as the next step

Alright quick update for everyone, so I switch it out for a bfg 500w. Same thing... nothing when I press the power on button. But this, one I can "jump" and it fires up fine.

So I am thinking its either the mobo or the case. I'm going to try to use my current rigs power button to fire up the other computer. If that works I know its the power button, if not its the mobo.

Anyone with more feedback or other ideas....
Sorry if it's already been asked, but do you have the power button wired to the correct pins? I know more than once I've accidentally switched the reset and power wires.
