I think my card is dying on me

EDIT: The replacement they sent me died. A screw from the mobo standoff fell onto it while gaming. :swearing: Called them up, told them it was DOA, let's see what happens.

EDIT: It's coming back home!

Twice, consecutively, playing Grid has caused hard locks. I'm afraid of playing any other 3D game, in fear of my card not being able to render even my desktop, in event of another hard lock.

Idle temp is fine with 53C, but I have no clue what my load temp is. I'll probably fire up Furmark, with my fans running and with them off. Just to get an idea.

Memory ICs are idling @ 53C as well. I have no idea what else can cause this insane instability, as this is the first time in over 10 years I have experienced such.

I think I voided the warranty as I installed a VF900... Would Sapphire care, even?

Thanks, for even looking, guys.

EDIT: I just confirmed with Furmark. Something is SERIOUSLY FUBAR'd on my card. It's not temps as it got only to 66C with both of my 130CFM fans off. My Yates were going as always. I don't know if it's the memory or the core itself.

RMA/Warranty
Sapphire VGA products carry a 2 year warranty with all enquires carried out through your initial place of purchase. This can only be carried out by the original purchaser Please contact your Dealer/Reseller for Warranty / RMA service. They will require proof of purchase which includes the original invoice/documentation.

1. Product Warranty will not be valid even if returned after purchased for the following cases:

Products that are defaced or physically damaged and modified by customer.
Products that become non-functional due to customer improper use.
Products that cannot be verified as Sapphire products.
Products that do not have a matching serial number between the product and the original receipt.
Products not sold from our official distributors or resellers.

2. GPU or ASIC device (VGA) is sensitive to thermal (heat) issue. The heat sink or fan is designed to meet the requirements for reliability of the product and the warranty is rendered invalid if the product is dismantled or the heat sink or cooler fan are removed as this may causes damage to the GPU or ASIC device . Non-compliance will cause the warranty of the product to be void and repair will be at the users cost.

VisionTek never cared! I wish I went with VT when I bought this 4850.

On the flip side, you can get another 4850 for cheap as hell now days.
I had a shappire with a trad 2 and I am going for the rma anyways. even if tehy rule it is not under warrenty maybe they can do somethign else for me. either way having a dead card laying around isn't doing me any good.

Soon there will be alot of cheap heat sinks for sale.
Yeah, I submitted a support ticket last night. I just need a temp card so I can at least use my computer for everything else but 3D applications.
BLARGH... they want me to update my drivers.

Problem is, I can't get to the actual install without the installer crashing.
I'll just make some BS up and get my RMA number ASAP.

1. They won't care as long as the original cooler is on it when you send it in.
2. you should do a full and proper uninstall and reinstall of your GPU drivers if at all possible.
3. check to make sure it's not something else that's unstable 1st.

Furmark and 3DM crash then hard lock my system... I'm pretty sure that it's my GPU.

Installed Windows 7 just to get the latest drivers. Don't ask why, long story.

Anyway, Sapphire finally agreed to give me the RMA. Now, where did I put the stock heatsink?
Sapphire finally gave me that RMA #.

Just finished installing the stock HSF with using Isopropyl 91% as the cleaning agent. It works wonders compared to the 70%.

Gonna ship it out tomorrow. They said 2 week turnaround. I really can't wait that long >_>
YES!

Althon Micro (the guys in charge of the RMA) sent me a tracking number to get my card back.

Should be here early next week. CAN'T WAIT!

Read latest update in OP.

Yet another reason to go for the better vendors. There's a reason they cost a premium.

What are you talking about?

It was my fault the second card died. Told them it was DOA. I'm hoping that I don't have the same luck with the third 4850 I may end up owning, if Althon Micro (RMA guys for Sapphire) end up believing my DOA story.

The premium brands like XFX, evga etc. don't care if you've removed the cooler or not, as long as it's on there when it goes in for RMA.

AFAIK most of them have the same stipulation in their warranties. Most of the time they honor the warranty regardless, but technically you're still violating the Warranty terms.

Like I said tho, 99% of the time no company cares as long as it's in the same config as you received it in when you send it back.
