BF3 High/Medium @ 1600x900.

User not going to OC.

Recommendations for CPU and GPU please.

Will be using a P8P67/H67/Z68 mATX board.

GPU should be ATI only.

To everyone saying you need a "true" quad, not true. it might help, but not as much as you might think. Check my i3 vs i7's comparisons on my sig. My rig can run BF3 no issues with less GPU power. i3's are more than enough for gaming in single-card situations.

I do recommend you to get a H67 mobo tho. You'd be wasting the true potential of a P67/Z68 mobo as the i3 cannot be overclocked, plus it'll come cheaper.

It depends on the game. If the game is programmed to use extra thread from quad core, yes it will increase the performance.

If the game is not programmed to use more than two threads, no. In that case i3 and i5 will perform almost the same (with factor being extra L3 cache and different clock speed).

i3 is dual core with HT. So windows and programs will still see it as a quad core.

Honestly, the CPU is fine. The GPU is what's going to be holding back your gaming performance. That i3 2100 will do fine with any GPU setup you could want (within reason, obviously no tri SLI / tri fire high end cards).

Should work well. However if your kicking around the idea of a 2300/2400 i5, do yourself a favor and go ahead and get a 2500k. You'll have the future proof CPU and you'll have room to grow in terms of GPU upgrades.

It's not a rig for me.
A customer wants it, and those are his specific instructions.
BF3 Medium to High, and at this resolution.

Will the i3 2100 and HD6850 handle this, or will I have to upgrade him to the i5 2400?

He wanted the HD6790 but I stopped him saying it wasn't something worth getting; get a HD6850 instead.

I think the i3 2100 + hd6850 should be OK for 1600x900 res. I still prefer the i3 5x0 chip over the i3 2100, they are both 32nm, and low power, but I like the OC ability of the i3 5x0 chip. I'm going to be doing another i3 5x0 comparison this week, comparing my i3 530 chip vs my i5 2500k with both a midrange(gtx470), and high end GPU (gtx580). BF3 will be one of the games tested eventually after it drops next week.

My rig can play BF3 on medium-high @ 1080p. A 6850 beats my 450 SLI, so it should be able to.
