i5 2500k and hyper 212 plus CM cpu cooler

Hey all,

I got a core i5 2500k and hyper 212 plus CM a few weeks ago. The problem is that (according to other owners on the internet) my cpu gets a little bit too hot.

At idle my cores and cpu temp is around 33°, which looks fine? Though at full stress with Prime95 my max. temp (of core 3 that is) gets to 65°, and this is on a NON-overclocked i5-2500k (my H67 board doesn't even support overclocking so..).

I have the standard coolermaster fan that came with the hyper 212 plus installed as a pull fan. I already tried to reapply the thermal paste using MX1 from zalman which has a nice brush. I applied a thin layer over the cpu and filled in the holes of the surface of the hyper heatsink just a little bit. In other words I really don't think I'm using too much thermal paste...

I'm reading temperatures of 50° at full stress with prime95 on even overclocked 4.2Ghz i5 2500k's. I really don't know what I did wrong.

I also checked that the screws are tight...

The only thing that looks weird to me is that my CPU fan is showing only a speed of 620RPM in SpeedFan 4.43. This also doesn't go up when at full load during prime95, which is weird.

Though in HWMonitor it is showing 2 times CPUFANIN0, both around 20000RPM. I simply plugged in the 4 pin on my motherboard CPU_FAN header.

If anyone could help me lowering my temps, please do so! I'm getting kinda desperate...

Your temps are fine, I wouldn't worry to be honest.

Your CPU fan is going slow because it does not need to go any faster, your temps are more than fine, don't worry

I'd switch the fan to a push configuration and see if your temps improve.

Forgot to mention that, a push configuration should do better than a pull config

oh yeah sorry, I was wrong, i ment a pull configuration (like it says on the box of the hyper 212, sort of 'intake' fan for the huge heatsink of the fan...

then I still don't see why some people get such low temperatures with the same cooler and cpu as I have...

No, make the fan blow the air through the heatsink
Yes, this is the 'pull' configuration right? it sucks in air to blow through the heatsink
it's like that: http://forums.pureoverclock.com/showthread.php?t=6875
That's a push config. The fan is pushing air through the heatsink. The 212+ is a good cooler able to keep my 955BE at 4GHz with no issues.
ok, so it's clear that I have a push config which should be best. Still I find my temps rather high. Guess when i'll be upgrading to a P67 board (in order to overclock) i'll let my local store config my cpu cooler... Attaching thermal paste properly is imo one of the hardest things out there lol.
your temps is perfectly fine lol, i got mine at 4,6 ghz and its hover around 55-58 degree load, 1500 rpm push configuration
I don't really understand, mine is at 3,3 ghz and it's around 65 degree load, also push configuration... What do you mean exactly with "load", is it during a prime run?
That's messed.
My 45NM I7 loads at 51C at stock with LinX

Maybe thermal paste? I use mx-2
Maybe case airflow?
I use MX-1 with the brush, and case airflow should be really good.
I only applied a thin layer on my cpu and filled the gaps of the heatsink bottom a bit with the brush and attached the fan really solid so I don't see any mistake there. Or is the MX-1 not a good thermal paste for this kind of cpu coolers?

aw i thought i saw u oc it to 4,2 and get 50 degree, 65degree at stock is not normal at all

Did you try just putting a small dot in the center of the CPU without applying any on the heatsink? I did that for my friend's build that also used the Hyper 212+ and he never saw past 40C with Prime95 for his PhenomII x2 555 @ 3.8ghz 1.425v(stock).
I tried that the first time but I couldn't get it nicely spread around the entire surface of the CPU... I found the brush and the MX-1 much more handy! Just spread it open using the brush, not applying too much of it... Maybe i'll try the coolermaster thermal paste that came with the hyper and try using a credit card this time to spread it over the heatsink + make sure that any gap is filled, maybe this will help?

If not, i'm getting a corsair H50 or H60 and let my local store set it up, so that i'm sure it will be ok. I really suck at applying thermal paste obviously!

What did you do after putting that small dot? Just put the heatsink on it and tighten in up? Or did you move it so that the thermal paste could spread ?

I only really worry about the center of the CPU, not so much the whole CPU, since most of the heat will come from the center. If only I could physically be there to see what's going on.

Check your BIOS/EFI menu for any automatic fan settings. Turn it off and have it run at max speed. It should be a little loud, but you can control it with Speedfan. If your fan is silent during Prime95, then that is where your problem might be.
