i5 Motherboard?

868 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  ACHILEE5
Are all i5 motherboards able to use i7s as well?

What's the best i5 motherboard for under $200?

Do any support SLI or Tri SLI?

And just to double check, I can crossfire with AMD gpus on an Intel motherboard right?

So if I get an i5 motherboard, I won't be able to upgrade to i7 on the same motherboard?

Sandy Bridge:

ASUS P8P67 Deluxe which I got mine for 200$ though it was revision 1 at SB launch.
P8P67 PRO is 180$:

Well that's kind of annoying.

The 775 could do Dual cores, and allowed people to go Quad whenever they wanted.

But now if I want to go Quad with i5, I have no real room to someday upgrade. I'm kinda stuck...

Edit:

And wow, $180 for a motherboard that only has 2 USB ports, and RAM placement that might interfere with large heatsinks?

I'm considering just going with a Quad Core now...
LGA 1155 socket mobos with p67/h67 chipset support both i7 & i5
LGA 1156 socket mobos with p55/h67/h55 support i5 & i7 8series cpu,
hope this helps
er i5 760 are quad cores!
I take it when you are talking about i5 and no upgrade path you are talking about the 1156 platform not the 1155 platform.

And as people have pointed out you can put i7 8XX series into a 1156 platform.

EDIT:

in fact to make it a bit clearer:

Nehalem microarchitecture based
platform/socket 1156
i3-5xx - Dual core
i5-6XX - Dual core
i5-7XX - Quad Core
i7-8XX - Quad core

platform/socket 1366
i7-9XX - Quad core
i7-970, 980X, 990X - Hex core

Sandy Bridge microarchitecture based
Platform/socket 1155
i3-21XX - Dual Core
i5-2XXX - Quad Core (apart from 2xxxT which can be dual and quad)
i7-2XXX - Quad Core

yup all i5 supporting lga1156 mobos. support i7 8xx series cpu's
like i7 860,870,880,875k.....
for sli see this

and this

if u want real cheap see this

hope this helps.....

the first link is the evga board which is best of the 3 but the third one is best vfm sli mobo....
and yes p55,h55 mobo/chipset do support cfx as well as sli.....
the second link biostar mobo allows both cfx as well as sli....

and to clear the confusion...the h55/p55 chipsets support these processors...
i3's--dual cores with ht but no turbo(who use it anyway if oc'ing)
i5--these come in 2 flavors...
dual core with ht and turbo and quad cores without ht but with turbo....
and finally i7's--quad core with ht and with turbo......

It depends entirely on the socket of the motherboard.

Socket 1156: Core i7 800 series, Core i5 600 & 700 series, Core i3 500 series.

Socket 1366: i7 900 series.

Socket 1155: All SandyBridge CPU's to date.
I don't know much about this socket, someone else may be able to help.
All I know is that there are a few i3's, i5's and i7's for it, these are different to the i-series of the previous sockets.

Edit: Fail, I'm such a slow typer lmao, I was beaten to it.
I want to upgrade from my Dual Core, but without dropping too much cash on the newer i7s.

either find a used up i7 8xx with 1156 chipset mobo or get an i5 2500k with a 1155 chipset mobo....
