i7 920 - Best cooler?

2896 Views 24 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Maddog7771
What is the best cooler I can get for my new i7 920? My only request is that it doesn't sound like a jet engine.

Thanks, I need an answer ASAP.

Lapped pressure modded TRUE w/ a 38mm fan. For something more quiet get a Noctua.
Get a TRUE with a bolt through kit, give it a lap too

Ok sounds good, could you give me some links?

i have a true black with no fan but in a antec 1200 which has large fans about a foot away. loads of around 40 and idles of around 33. those are combined summer and winter temp averages.
What do you guys mean when you say lap ?

?

TRUE's come stock with a bolt through kit.

I agree as well though. A lapped TRUE with decent push/pull dual fans that is pressure modded (I use rubber washers off the back of the motherboard, creates much more even pressure) is still the best cooler available.

Using increasing levels of fine wet/dry sandpaper to even out the concave in most TRUE's contact surfaces. Easy to do (and cheap). Provides a big improvement.

Is there anywhere I can get a guide to doing that setup?

And could I get links to the specific TRUE and Noctua? Thanks.

there are many guides available for lapping. there are several posted here.

regarding coolers, if you are going to do a lapping job, then the TRUE is the best bet.

What you are looking for is:

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme LGA1366 mounting (most online retailers sell it).

There is a black version that costs quite a bit more but is the exact same (other than being anodized black).

There is a pure copper version that is almost double the price but provides only a 1-2C improvement under load (and is so heavy it actually warps the board its mounted on).

Just go with the vanilla TRUE but make sure to get the LGA1366 version (includes the proper mounting assembly)

My bad I never owned a TRUE but with my old Tuniq I had to make my own.

Hmmm...I lapped my Q6600, is it any different to lap the TRUE?

I think I started at 400 grit and ended up at 2000, I sanded it wet.
Nope its the same, I found lapping a heatsink easier. You have more to hold on to.

It's when a CPU cooler like the TRUE get's down real low with you and you tip it 50$.

Im looking at an i7 rig mate, im going for the Noctura simply because its nice and quiet

Lapping is mis perceived as hard and time consuming.

It really isn't. I did my TRUE in about 2 hours (off and on). Cost me about $12 in sand paper (1 sheet each of 400/800/1200/1600/2000 grit wet dry).

The results are easily noticeable

Here are the first five slides I took:

And the finished TRUE

http://www.crazypc.com/store/merchan...ue-black-50984. For the TRUE black. You can even get it prelapped if you are too lazy to do it yourself.
