i7 920 Too Wam

Hi all,

I just put together a new system with i7 920, MSI Platinum SLI, Evga 260 gtx SC, 6gb Corsair, Thermaltake element s case. 1 dvd/rw and 2 500gb hard drives, IC diamond compound, stock Intel fan. I just put on the IC comnaund and it takes a bit of time to settle but still seems high.

Everything runs fine but no matter what temp program I use, my idle temps are 46-48. When i run prime95, I’m hitting 80 by 40% so I stop it. The idle temp should be in the 30's. When I go into the bios the CPU temp is 39-40, 60 IOH and 47 inside the case. These temps are after running the system for a few hours. I hope the 920 is not faulty.

I am going to get a better fan but the temps seem to warm. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,

Its not faulty thats how mine was with the stock fan. Get something better like a nactura or a xiggy or a true.
Welcome to the club. I too about crapped myself when I saw the temps for the first time. Your next step is going to be getting some more air into your case if possible and definitely replacing that Intel cooler.
yeah load temps are what u look at... idle temps dont mean much altho 40s is even high at idle
One of the reasons I went with a Q9650 instead. the i920 compared to the Q9650 is a bit faster in some benches at the same speed, but I can run my Q9650 at 4ghz on air 24/7 and never see any core above 51C under prime or orthos.

The i7's run hot. Of course you could always disable hyperthreading. Seems like thats a way to drop temps.

Temps will drop about 15C with HT disabled, in my experience. I'm under water and I'm still hitting around [email protected] with HT enabled. Definitely need a new rad...

As others have said, get a better cooler, like a TRUE or Noctua.
