I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you meant to say "Is the Q9550 that much slower than a i7 920??" It isn't incredibly slower than a i7 920, but it is slower.

It depends. In gaming, it doesn't really matter.

For more cpu heavy stuff, it's slightly faster clock for clock (like 20%), and if you're running multithreaded applications then it's going to be much much faster due to ht.

Also, they overclock better. 9500s generaly won't do 4.4ghz. Also on the i7 you get tripple channel ram which can help in some specific situations.

So really, it depends on your use.

Honestly It's just for gaming, and I want to get the 9550 at microcenter for 170
I do multi-task, so if I would benefit that much from going to an 920, then I just might. My board in my sig rig isnt that old, so I can still RMA it.

In gaming, the difference is VERY small. But in video encoding and stuff, the i7 920 wins by a marginal amount.

if you are benchmarking = yes

converting videos = kind of

gaming = barely

day to day use = not at all

i7s are for people who want to most of their watercooling and want those 4.2+ ghz overclocks to grow the size of their Epeens, but I would say if you have the option of going with the i7 or a standard quad core, I'd go with the i7 because the 1366 socket is going to be around for a while (hence the i9)

lol epeens. I dont give a **** what people think, I'm just doing some upgrades and micro center has the 920 for 199 and that seems like a good buy, granted I have to spend more on a mobo, and get new ram, but I can prob sell my sig rig can I not?
Like I say to everyone else... If you're just using your computer for gaming, the i7 920 isn't a wise choice unless you can get it for 200$~

In your case, you already have the mobo and ram. I would say Q9550 unless you can sell your stuff for a fair amount.

it's 199 at micro center
I can RMA the mobo like I said

The 9550 is only 20 bucks cheaper haha. IM CONFUSED!

If you RMA the mobo, could you replace it with a 1366? If that's the case, go for the 920. You could sell your ddr2 ram for a fair amount.

I wish I could sell it on here, but I can't even get an appraisal yet because of my REP (
) I would have to replace it with a 1366

ahh. Well both are great processors. If you're not using your computer for anything other then gaming and normal use, just go for the q9550. It will save you the hassle of selling your other stuff.
