i7 965 Temps?

636 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  cal003
I'm seeing temps in the 90s on Prime95 load. I'm using a CoolerMaster V8 aftermarket cooler on my i7 965. I have tried reseating and reapplying Arctic silver compound. Is this TOO hot? I will generally not be at this kind of load normally. My idle is around 50 and with my general usage it gets up to around 65.

Temp in the 90's is way to hot and even your idle of 50 is not normal. What settings are you using? Voltage, etc.
Please fill in your systems specs in your profile so we can see what your setup is. Its always the first thing everyone looks at.

Yeah, 90*C is way to hot. Something is wrong.
If I ever see over 60*C on any machine I shut it down asap and see what's going on.
quick off topic question

why do u have an i7 965 and a 9600gt?
why didnt u get a 920 and a gtx 285 for example?
I'm running at a voltage of 1.41 with 26 multi x154 for a clock speed of 4ghz.

Maybe he doesn't play games, there are a lot of people that don't really buy "Enthusiast" video cards...

Yea he could just be a proccesorholic that likes to get the best.
true true.
I'm really not that much of a gamer. I do run some resource-heavy applications at times for work. This is the first time i went with an extreme edition processor.

90C load temps are not at all unusual at such a speed, voltage, and cooling, with HT enabled.

I and of itself, the temp would not be of serious concern, but combined with your OC and voltage, it could very well shorten the life span of the chip significantly. Still, I doubt you have anything to worry about in the short term. The chip will likely still last years.

Are you certain you need such a high voltage to remain stable at 4GHz? That's around the same voltage I needed for my average to below average i7 920 to remain stable during 12 hours of LinX + ATiTool, in 30C ambients. Only the worst of the 965s should require such settings.

well for one your voltage is way high just for hitting 4ghz... and with my CM v8 was getting max of like 68 @ 4.1ghz on load so yea bad... whats your ambient? and have you tried lower multi and higher qpi?
