i7 build help from scratch

thinking about either the Foxconn BloodRage GTI
or the EVGA X58 LE.

big EVGA fan.

i want Raid 0 probably 2 X 1tb.
is the Caviar Black 1TB the fastest 1tb hard drive? i know its pretty old but the newer ones are aimed at efficiency and "green"

also is the GTX 260 still the best value for performance? planning on getting one now and another one for SLI later down the road.

Go for the caviar black 640 gb - better performance than the 1tb. Get a couple and raid em. Then for storage get a 1tb caviar green which is for efficiency since it lower its speed when not in use to save power.
so the 640gig black has good speed and price to gig ratio?

also what about the GTX 260? any brands u guys recommend?
the BFG was around $140 which is the lowest i seen.

havent been keeping up with the tech and need a recommendation on the mobo.
i would recommend getting an SSD for boot drive. it's true when they say once you go SSD you'll never go back

would a SSD beat 2 X caviar black in raid 0?
and by how much?

im seriously considering a SSD for a boot drive.

Yes, in most things.

A good SSD will be noticeably more responsive.

The fastest spinning HDD's out there are the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB drives, they're quieter than the blacks as well

instead of an SSD, why don't you get a 300GB velociraptor? SSD's are not worthy atm

any imagine 10k+rpm being quiet o_O
lol

i'll stick with raid 0 on 2 samsung F3s 1tb or the 640gig WD black (whichever gives me the best deal at the time)

still need a lot of help with the mobo.
and a GTX 260 brand.

what's your budget?
oh sorry that should have been the first thing i should mention.
i guess around 1k. dont want to spend too much cuz i know next year it would be worth a lot less then wat i paid.
ok so, what exactly do you need? I see you already have almost everything except for the i7 platform (cpu, motherboard, cpu heatsink and RAM), a new GPU and... wlat else do you need? do you want more storage? This is what you could get (my reccomendation)

Intel core i7 920 $290
Powercolor AX5850 1GBD5-MDHG ATI Radeon HD 5850 1GB $310
EVGA 121-BL-E756-TR MicroATX motherboard LGA1366 $210
GeIL 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1066MHZ (You can always overclock
) model GV36GB1066C7TC $136
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 CPU cooler $75

All prices were taken off newegg.

Now, what else are you gonna do in your PC besides of gaming? Because I could get you a cheaper PC if you take the AMD way, or if you go with a LGA 1156 platform (similar performance as i7, except for multi GPU setups, which can be solved using a dual GPU card like the GTX 295 or a HD5970)

AMD setup (great performance for gaming, similar to i7 on that field)
DFI LANParty DK 790FXB-M3H5 AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard $170
Powercolor AX5850 1GBD5-MDHG ATI Radeon HD 5850 1GB $310
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz $166
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 Model KHX1600C8D3K2/4GX $104
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 CPU cooler $75

Prices taken from Newegg as well.

You choose...

im going to stick with Intel since iv experienced AMD performance on multiple computers and it was good at all.

i bought a ATI video card in the past and it was really good value for the money. but going to stick with the Nvidia stuff too.

going to go to microcenter to pick up a i7 for like $200 when i get a chance to start this build.

the motherboad looks good
EVGA 121-BL-E756-TR MicroATX

thanks
before taking a decision, ask to yourself the following question:

Besides of gaming, what else are you gonna do on the system? And, about the AMD rig, check out this review, as you can see, the Phenom II hold pretty well compared to i7 in gaming, and it's cheaper.

Also, what's the need of staying with an Nvidia card? They still haven't released a DX11 card (Fermi will come out until april, I think) and meanwhile, the HD5850 can be a very valuable card for the price. You can upgrade later if you want.
Some advice about your RAID configuration.

You wanna go RAID 0 with 2 1Tb drives? Big mistake

By having such large drives in RAID 0, I'm assuming that you will keep all of your data on there, like pics, movies etc etc. RAID 0 will fail eventually and with no back up, you'll lose everything in the array.

A better solution would to have the OS on a small SSD (for speed) and put those 1Tbs in RAID 1 config. With RAID 1, if one fails, the other will still have the data on it.

Just my 2c

yeah i understand the risk of raid 0. but iv been using a single hard drive for years (actually never used anything else) and its been good to me especially the samsung hard drives.

also wat about the market? is it a good time to build?

Coolwaters, just to add to this conversation, you would love the x58 LE. It's an awesome board and a great overclocker.
