hi, i read somewhere that in order to get a good FPS for games is a combination of both the GPU and the CPU. thats obverse. but because i dont have so much money to throw around, i am wondering which combination would give me the best FPS.

basically i am most likely going for the HD5870. would that be a good combination with the i7 950

OR

wait for the HD5970 but with the i7 920.

another question, why is it that when i am looking at the rigs of the OCN members, the details in the signatures, i see more 920 than the 950? is the 920 most value for money?

For a start the 920 overclocks like mad so you dont need to waste the money on the 950. If your not overclocking though it is a faster stock chip but not worth the money really.

My advice to you would be to get a 5970 with a 920 DO and overclock the hell out of it.
Remember you'd need a motherboard that has the same socket as the i7 920. Sorry if you already know this; just helping out.
The 920 is a BEAST of an overclocker, but requires heafty cooling. Water is almost a necessity to go 4+.

Not true at all. Most will do 4Ghz easily on air.

Almost without exception GPU is more important than CPU for high frame rates. Both CPU's you mention are powerful. Other than possibly a couple of games (GTA4 comes to mind) you would not see a significant difference and might not even in those?
okays, but i dont have any experience with overclocking, but i could always learn if its not too hard. haha.

when Hickeydog mention water, would the Corsair h50 allow the 920 to overclock to 4?

@ Dpak, haha no problem, i am really noob. by the way, what socket is the 920 using? are all the i7s the same?
