So I am planning a new build. I can't decide on 775 or i7.

Here is what I was looking at for the platforms.

775:
Mobo

CPU

RAM

i7:
Mobo

CPU

RAM

If your going to pay extra for DDR3 ram and board with 775 then might as well Go i7. Otherwise go DDR2 and save a bunch of cash for your build and then ask your question again.

Y'know what. I would go i7 if you have the cash.
But the wise decision would be to wait a month or so till prices drop a bit and you can make a more informed decision.

I would wait a bit longer for the i7. The prices should drop Q1 next year. And DDR3 is kinda like what everyone will have in the future IMO so why not go for i7.

Mid/high range: i7. Low end: 775.

I'd wait until next year when (hopefully) prices on both i7 and 775 will drop.

I have the money, I think I will go i7. But some of it will be a Christmas present.

Then maybe get the cpu now as the newer ones may be binned better and OC better.
See if you can get your Christmas present on boxing day as stuff will be cheaper and there should be more low voltage (the recommended 1.65v) DDR3 out by then.

i7 by a long way. I made an excel spreadsheet with two builds on. One was an 775 build with an E8400. The other was a 1366 (i7) build with the 920. The i7 only came out £300 more costly, so overall not a bad result.

Shoot, now I am second guessing my i7 thoughts....

Need some really intuitive help.

Say I get a q6600 3.6ghz or so and 8 gb's of RAM. (OC'ed of course) How would that compare to a i7 920 4+ghz with 6 gb's or ram?

I'm pretty sure that the i7 would beat the hell out of that Q6600... I could be far from correct though

Lol ok. I might as well bite the bullet and get i7... Although my Coolermaster hyper HSF would be useless, unless they come out with an i7 attachment.

You might be able to mc'gyver the thermalright 1366 retention mount to work on the coolermaster HSF.

It is liek a dif off 1200, or 800 for an entirely new build minus Monitor, hd and such
