i7 or Phenom II. That is the question.

Sorry, I just watched a "Will It Blend" Video.

OK, so in the next couple weeks I'm expecting to upgrade my PC. I can either go with....

Intel:
MSI Platinum X58
Intel Core i7 2.66GHz
2GB DDR3 (Upgrade later to 12GB)

AMD:
Foxconn Destroyer
AMD Phenom II 940
(Stay with my 8GB DDR2)

If I go AMD I will probably sell my GTX280 and try to get a 4870X2.

Obviously, the AMD build will be alot cheaper, but I've used AMD for almost all my builds and I've heard nothing but good things about the i7's. The i7's will break the bank but hey, if it's worth it I'd rather spend more now than be stuck with wanting more from the AMD system. The only thing that really bugs me with the Intel system is the DDR3. ATM I can only afford 2GB, will this impact performance a lot until I end up with at least 6GB+?

Just looking around for suggestions, thanks.
Also, after posting this I will not be here for about ~25min, so I can't reply... lol
Cheers.

don't see the point in swapping a gtx 280 for a 4870x2 myself, performance differences aren't -that- big. I say just keep your current mobo, swap out your phenom for that phenom 2, and spend money elsewhere

If you go with a Destroyer, I'd stay with the 280 so you can go SLI later on if need be. No point in going with an ATI card on an nVidia chipset. A 790FX board is a different story though.
Sorry, wasn't thinking about the whole nVidia/ATI chipset thing.
Let me revise this a little.
If I go AMD Phenom II with...
nVidia Chipset, I will stay with the GTX280
If I go with an ATI chipset I will go 4870 X2, (or attempt to)

Now is there any difference?

Much better.

All that's left to do now is work out a budget.

If I were you, I'd keep the GTX 280 build a Phenom II and since you're wanting to use the Destroyer mobo which is the nVidia 780a chipset, you can SLI another GTX 280 if you ever feel froggy. The Phenom II 940 is a very very very nice processor and won't break the bank on you either.

Keep in mind that when gaming, there is little if any difference between and i7 and a Phenom II 940
Core i7 is what I'm getting. Also, you can get 12GB of 1600mhz g.skill for like $220.

Correct.

For a pure gaming build, I'd even recommend an X3. The 720BE has even slightly surpassed the i7 920 in some gaming benchmarks..

I'm trying to find the review atm.

Edit - Here you go.

If you've been happy with your AMD builds, stick with AMD. Phenom II 940 won't exactly be slow, and you'll save heaps of money.

I knew the phenom was on its way, but i've always been an intel boy, and I went with i7. i also wanted to up the socket.

If you've always been an amd boy, i can't imagine a reason to switch brands; as mentioned above a quad core processor with similar clock speeds will perform similarly in games.

other than I think the i7 has a much cooler name then phenom II

Hmm.. they both overclock very well, correct? I'm leaning towards Intel because if it isn't what I want in the end I can always sell it and still be able to buy a Phenom II set.
No matter which way you slice it the i7 will cost considerably more. I priced out a budget AM3 rig (710x3, asus m4a79T-E, 4gb ram) with DDR3 and I can buy one for about $360. An i7 build will cost over $600 for similar parts.
Hell for the price of the cheapest i7 you can buy a CPU and a board.
if gaming is your preference, go phenom 2, you can quad-sli with that board since they are perfectly spaced and will pretty much eat the i7 setup.

if not, then i7 will be a better choice.

between an i7 and ph2 940be, the ph2 is more overclockable but it's trickier to oc it than the i7.

That's right.

Given you have amazing cooling of course. These Phenom II's LOVE the cold weather.

Tough choice both platforms have their positives and negative. I think going with Phenom II might be the better route for you the price/performance is so nice. I agree with gerikoh if you are just gaming go with Phenom II if you plan on doing other things Core i7 or if you just want the best thing out there and a very easily OC cpu i7.
Personally, I think I might go for the Phenom II, though having the "greatest" is always tempting. No matter what, though, I think I'd stick with the GTX 280. (Get to folding on it, though!) I also think no matter the platform, you should probably go with DDR3, though there isn't a huge performance gain right now, you have some space over the years for more RAM upgrades, since we're already at the days of 4GB being standard.
